RE: 2023 MLB Hot Stove Thread
After a Winter of somewhat confusing moves, taking on others' salary dumps and shoring p the bullpen (I guess), Braves made a bigger trade with Red Sox, getting oft-injured and barely usable Chris Sale for young, good-hitting Vaughn Grissom, who should do well in the bandbox of Fenway. On the surface, it's a name pitcher after the Braves, who are somewhat desperate for starting pitching, lost out on some of the other mid-tier free agents and trade candidates. But getting sale might be more akin to getting almost nothing. At this late point in his career, he can barely stay healthy and pitch more than a few games this season if that. Trading away the highly marketable Grissom, who has good upside potential for someone with a spot to play him, for such a flawed player seems quite a waste. AA has done an admirable job in the past for the Braves FO, navigating big contract decisions on players who either wanted too much (Swanson) or never were interested in re-signing with the Braves in the first place(Freeman). However, this years' offseason seems glitchy at best, off the rails at worst. We'll see when the season begins, but as good as Sale used to be (and he was at times) it's gonna be sad to see him on the Braves DL all season or nearly all season and then watching Grissom finally break out into his own with the Red Sox and wonder what we really could have gotten for him. Good for the Red Sox to get rid of a now nearly-useless player and get excellent value in return.
