Cignetti will be on their short list. I hope the interest isn't mutual.

Have not heard Duke as a spot for Cig. NC State if it were to open would scare me but don’t see that happening.

Don’t think Duke would interest cog as it is the private school version Indiana. Basketball school where there is a a ceiling that is below CFP without all stars aligning.

What difference to a coaching candidate would it make whether the school is private or public?

I can see academic standards and entrance requirements hindering recruiting somewhat, but I believe there are a lot of bright, elite athletes that can be lured to a school the caliber of Duke. Likewise, the portal.

Speaking of Duke and the portal, can’t forget we got a grad transfer QB from them that wasn’t going to be eligible at JMU. Lucky for us as it resulted in us going after Centeio. 04-cheers

$$$

It is not a coincidence that of the 69 teams in the P5, 13 are private and the other 56 are public.

Of those 13 Privates in the P5, many of them rarely compete with the "elite". How many times you heard about Vanderbilt, Northwestern, Wake Forest, Duke, Stanford, BYU, Syracuse, TCU, or even Baylor competing for the National Championship in the last 30 years? Notre Dame has finished in the Top 4 in the AP only once since 1993. Their last championship was 1988.

You need a top-of-the-line stadium? An upgrade/expansion? If they can work their state's political system, Publics can pass the cost to the millions of taxpayers in their state. Privates have to hope for some very generous donors...or be like Miami or USC and rent out public stadiums.

Even just using things like student fees - the Privates tend to have smaller enrollments than the Publics. If you look at the ACC+Notre Dame, the six smallest schools are the six private schools. And all of them now have smaller enrollments than JMU.

Most of the Privates realized a long time ago that while they can compete strongly in sports like basketball, there is just no way they can compete the football Arms Race.

Duke has six seasons of 8 wins or more since Spurrier left in 1989. Their bowl games in those seasons were Military, Independence, Pinstripe, Sun, Chick Fil-A, and the Hall of Fame (which I believe is now the Outback/ReliaQuest Bowl).

David Cutcliffe started to get it rolling and he couldn't even sustain it. Elko has done a great job and I admit they would be much better than 7-5 this year if not for the injury to Riley Leonard. But history says, that's a tough place to build and sustain a winning football team.

Duke's average attendance is below JMU's I believe. And that's with a lot of help from Clemson, UNC, NC State, Notre Dame, and Virginia Tech fans when they play there!

Rumors are Mack Brown at UNC was thinking about stepping down to retire. Would the Tar Heels opt for another older coach? I doubt it, but if offered that job might appeal to Cig. And JMU is on the Dukes future schedule, is it not?

I would think that if they targeted an older coach he would have to have some sort of ties to the school, HCCC hasn't played or coach there before.

Not Stepping Down

Thanks! I guess that’s one less job JMU fans won’t have to speculate about. 04-cheers

Brown hasn’t aged well. He looks like crap. I’m surprised that at age 72 going on 73 he still wants to stay in the fight, but good for him. The multiple millions he’s being paid helps purchase a lot of pain pills. 03-lmfao

re: Duke

"Candidate to watch and latest buzz: James Madison coach Curt Cignetti. Duke doesn't want to become a stepping-stone job. There are several veteran coaches available, including Cignetti, who could be looking for a final stop in their first Power 5 job. Cignetti has done excellent work at James Madison, going 52-9 and shepherding the program into the FBS. He also worked in North Carolina at Elon and made two FCS playoff appearances. Cignetti, 62, is 119-35 overall as a college coach and could see Duke as a final stop."

Frank Reich has been fired from the Carolina Panthers. "Reich told the Observer that he wasn't done with coaching, but he added 'this is probably the final chapter of my NFL journey.'" Having another "big" name looking for a gig only helps our cause.

Nebraska snatched up Matt Rhule after he left the Panthers before Reich. Certainly helps supply names above Cignetti.

Frankly to us and a lot of coach reporters who pay attention, Cignetti is a great get for a lot of P5 schools. It’s a very logical and pragmatic take. The one thing we may have going for us that many times boosters and departments make bizarre choices.

Told you so. Hopefully, Cig resists the temptation, but Duke would be a sweet gig.

I'm sure Duke and other lower end p5s will be interested. I don't think Cig will be, but we'll see. What's the best job our there rn? Duke and Houston? Nothing seems particularly like a great fit yet.

Hearing that Duke may be looking in a different direction and more likely to be looking for a young up and comer. Last time pretty much all candidates were P5 assistants. I’d look for younger guy on the come up.

Based on facts on ground and the AD there just don’t see them hiring a 62 year old white guy. I could be way off base here but if you do a little research I think it is obvious the direction they go.

ULM HC Terry Bowden was fired. I didn't see it mentioned with a quick glance at this thread and front page.

Duke is a terrible job that is going to be made even worse when the ACC Six leave.

Cig may or may not take it. But it's not a good job. At all.
