Cignetti will be on their short list. I hope the interest isn't mutual.
Have not heard Duke as a spot for Cig. NC State if it were to open would scare me but don’t see that happening.
Don’t think Duke would interest cog as it is the private school version Indiana. Basketball school where there is a a ceiling that is below CFP without all stars aligning.
What difference to a coaching candidate would it make whether the school is private or public?
I can see academic standards and entrance requirements hindering recruiting somewhat, but I believe there are a lot of bright, elite athletes that can be lured to a school the caliber of Duke. Likewise, the portal.

It is not a coincidence that of the 69 teams in the P5, 13 are private and the other 56 are public.
Of those 13 Privates in the P5, many of them rarely compete with the "elite". How many times you heard about Vanderbilt, Northwestern, Wake Forest, Duke, Stanford, BYU, Syracuse, TCU, or even Baylor competing for the National Championship in the last 30 years? Notre Dame has finished in the Top 4 in the AP only once since 1993. Their last championship was 1988.
You need a top-of-the-line stadium? An upgrade/expansion? If they can work their state's political system, Publics can pass the cost to the millions of taxpayers in their state. Privates have to hope for some very generous donors...or be like Miami or USC and rent out public stadiums.
Even just using things like student fees - the Privates tend to have smaller enrollments than the Publics. If you look at the ACC+Notre Dame, the six smallest schools are the six private schools. And all of them now have smaller enrollments than JMU.
Most of the Privates realized a long time ago that while they can compete strongly in sports like basketball, there is just no way they can compete the football Arms Race.
