Ever heard of the transfer portal?
The portal is not some magic instrument that a program can just magically become great or get back to a previous level. Assembling Talented teams via the portal mean nothing if you have a bad coach. Just look at the talent on Louisvilles team. Because of bad coaching they are just as bad as last year and losing to teams like Arkansas State and Chattanooga. The portal hasnt improved their team the last couple of years.
Yeah it absolutely is a magic instrument. An excellent coach could take the Louisville (or Indiana, G’town etc) job and immediately put a competitive team on the floor.
As soon as they get a new coach, a new team is possible. That’s my point. It’s not like it used to be where a coach was restricted to the previous roster and transfers had to sit out a year.
So in other words you are saying that the portal is a magic instrument, IF, they have an excellent coach. I could get on board with that line of reasoning, even though you kind of moved the goalposts, lol. But your earlier statement was that nothing takes years to remedy anymore because of the portal.
The portal is just one part of remedying a program. As you now mentioned, good coaching is also required. Then there is recruiting within the portal. Then there is having good facilities to attract good recruits. Then there is NIL monies that need to be raised. All these areas need to be considered besides the portal. The portal is available to all 300 plus bb programs. If simply having access to the portal is all it took to quickly remedy a program, instead of taking years, we would have 300 plus bb programs already remedied, right about now.
No, I wasn’t moving the goal posts, I included the coach who I think would be successful there. Mark just highlighted part of my quote, but the comment implied a competent coach is necessary.

Louisville seems to have a pulse. They blew out Peppardine by over 20 points tonight and has already equalled their total number of wins from last season. This is just the second month of the bb season.

HEY!!
We EXCEEDED our win total from last year ... let's be accurate!
We were 4 and 28 last season.
We are 5 and 6 this year.
But I expect the as$ kickings to begin starting Thursday (Kentucky, at our house), and to continue to at least February.
UK is followed by Virginia, Pitt, Miami, NC State, UNC, Wake Forest, Duke, Virginia, etc etc.
We may win 2 or 3 more the rest of the way.

My mistake, lol. If you guys could get to 10 to 12 wins this year that would make for some serious progress.

RE: Louisville Basketball
Progress to me is a full staff firing in January, likely around 1/15 when new BOT members in place, after players back enrolled for second semester so we can field a team, and we've rallied the boosters for the extra 2 mil in buyout....if it doesn't happen in January, just wait until April to save the 2 mil with the buyout going from 8 to 6 then...
Then we begin the real rebuild coming out of the NCAA cloud...with a real coach that knows how to run a program, win in regular season and post season, and has no ties to the former players of the 80s/90s...

Paying the extra 2 million and replacing him in January would probably keep you from missing out on some good coaches that may move jobs before the after season buyout drops to 6mil.

More like the next 3 months....no matter if there is a firing or just let it ride out, not much will change until new perm coach, and rehaul the roster with portal....
The only way this season would have brought any entertainment would have been to fire full staff after Ark St loss, bring in the rumored interim staff of Mark Lieberman, Siva, O'Bannon all with Pitino coach/player ties/knowledge..... I would have done that...go on covid pause for 2 weeks to reinstall Pitino Ball, skip the UK game, then see if anything fun could come out of it for conference play...we're past that now....And that was/may still be the interim staff that finishes out the season, but that will just be to babysit the team through games at this point

Nah, we can do both at same time these next 3 months.....let KP ride out this year, to save the PR bashing...all the while AD Heird can be out talking to agents/coaches about an April hiring....This seems like common practice nowadays in both football and basketball. The coach can be unofficially recruiting for us during that time too.

RE: Louisville Basketball
AD Heird is said to like at least 1 SEC coach, then there was the 2-3 guys pre/early season we were all focused on in Cronin, Tang, Mussleman, ..before they've started to all tank this year.. Obviously the tourney can put more shine back on those 3 again, particularly with Musselman.......then the 2 big fish ideas of Jay Wright with the relationship with our AD, and Billy D with possibility of coming back to resurrect a college program from the NBA, ala Pitino......However, I definitively think those are pie in the sky now...Jay comfortable on tv now, and Billy with the close friendship with Rick, we would probably need Rick to get in his ear to help persuade him to take our job, and by all accounts Rick is still bitter about the end of his tenure here, even though he's said he deserved to be fired.
I think at minimum we need a coach with multiple years of tourney success....good with player development and portal acquisitions. I think there will be chatter about can we be the right spot for Beard and his baggage or can we get Dusty May and keep him away from Indiana.

RE: Louisville Basketball
It’s been a long time since I’ve been active on the ACC board. UofL nearly lost me with some of the movement of the university and the athletic department. Some real questionable and knuckleheaded things have occured to bring embarrassment and disgrace to the Cards.
That being said, I am really pulling for Kenny Payne to succeed. I just haven’t seen any fundamentally good quality basketball coaching. It’ll be interesting to see how successful he needs to be to remain the UofL coach.
I am still willing to give him some time. But in the event a change is made, I’d like to see UofL go after Scott Drew (HC Baylor) or Chris Holtmann (HC Ohio St., and a KY native).
Right now, it’s painful and embarrassing to watch the UofL program. There will be better days ahead. GO CARDS! Play and win with excellence, class, energy, and character.
