New conference brainstorming
Let's start with the constitution. I don't think the ACC or any conference that has been around for a while had planned on media rights being so lucrative in the future, schools just wanted to be grouped with like minded institutions in the same region. So I hope that I can draw a constitution that accounts for changing times.
The other thing I want to do is to strike a balance between athletics and academics.
The conference should not disqualify schools because their main mission is to educate their community or have a small enrollment, or small endowment or whatever, but it should meet a reasonable minimum standard of a top tier university within it's mission with a realistic expectation (in good faith) for gradual improvement. Schools should be clean, properly maintained and safe.
Athletics are expected to compete at the highest level in a minimum number of different sports that the conference offers. Sports that have the greatest visibility are weighted more, but the lesser visibility sports should have minimum standards and potential for growth.
A commissioner's role: the presidents of the member institutions will vote on a candidate and he will serve a 4 year term and a maximum of 2 terms. He will have free reign over creative control within certain boundaries. His job is to act as an ambassador and push for changes or adjustments that will bring benefits to the conference. His conduct and actions should be above reproach. His staff should be of the same character including referees and other officials. Game officials will always be reviewed and graded to insure highest quality.
Conference head quarters: will be selected based on accessibility to it's founding members and later reviewed as the conference grows. A operating budget will be voted on yearly with incentive bonuses handed out to officials that grade highest. There should be a stockpiled "war chest" that can act as loans for current members or transitioning members and insurance for emergencies (Covid).
Ticket profit sharing: Within conference games, the designated home team will always take 75% of the revenue from ticket sales, the designated away team will take 25% of ticket sales (Example: GT is the designated home team in Ireland vs FSU in 2024). Neutral site or conference championship game ticket sales will be split 50-50. This would also include games played on a participating team's campus.
Media profit sharing: All media profits made from interconference games are shared proportionately to what ratings it brings to it's media partner(s). All out of conference games that fall in the control of it's individual members can work out their own media deal or pool it with other conference members.
Post season profit sharing: Individual teams are rewarded with "success incentive initiative" bonuses based on their accomplishments in the post season; the further they get into the cfb playoffs or NCAA tournaments, the more they are rewarded. Each team keeps 25% and what's left over is pooled and divided with the rest of the conference.
