Memphis is such a great city!
As U.S. crime trends down, murders rise in Memphis.

This is for all you glass half full types who insist that Memphis is a wonderful place full of wonderful people and that crime isn't any bigger an issue in Memphis than any other place.

FTR, I love Memphis even as I know it's become a shitehole so don't start labeling me as a hater, I'm not. I'm a realist who routinely travels across the city into some of the worst spots imaginable. Even the nicer sections I travel to are subject to the same crimes as the not so nice sections.

"MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Homicide rates dropped dramatically across the country in 2023, but Memphis is bucking the national trend with a triple-digit increase in killings.

Memphis Police records show 393 homicides in Memphis as of Dec. 28 this year, and 337 of them were considered murders. At least two more people have been killed in the past 24 hours.

The city is poised to end the year with about 400 homicides. That is roughly 100 more than last year and 50 more than 2021.

Memphis breaks homicide record, again
But the bloodshed comes in a year when violence is dropping at a record pace in other U.S. cities, according to The Hill, citing data from AH Datalytics. Nationwide, homicide is down nearly 13 percent from this point last year.

► Homicide data from AH Datalytics

The data used by the firm differs from the numbers collected by MPD. However, it shows homicides in Memphis increasing by more than 30% this year.

Compare that to New Orleans, where the rate declined by 27%, or Detroit, which saw a 17% drop. Both cities have populations similar to Memphis.

On Nov. 20, Memphis broke the homicide record it set two years earlier. This is the third year in the past four years the city has set another new record.

Outgoing Memphis Mayor Jim Strickland, in his final weekly newsletter Friday, noted that crime decreased in the city in 2022, before reversing course in 2023.

“(S)omething changed this year,” Strickland said. “Violent and property crime are dramatically up, despite overall crime being down throughout the country.”

Strickland placed much of the blame on the court system and prosecutor’s office, but said he had hope that 2024 would see a turnaround as District Attorney Steve Mulroy launches a new focus on prosecuting repeat and violent offenders.

Mulroy outlines new ‘aggressive prosecution’ strategy for some crimes
Last week, Mulroy laid out what he called a strategy of “aggressive prosecution” to get tough on crime by targeting certain priority offenses such as murder, carjacking and smash-and-grab robberies. The strategy goes in effect Jan. 1.

Memphis Police officers received a 14% pay increase in this year’s city budget, but recruiting has left the force below its recommended number of officers.

Most cities are smart. They play with their crime stats. Just sayin.

Las Vegas for example .

I got paramedic friends there . Violence is swept under the rug.

A few years ago Police Chief's in both New Orleans & Nashville have been caught in how crimes have been reported to falsely lower their cities crime statistics.

You got it.
Stats, in general, are designed to be a means to an end. Take the covid stats for example.

I shrug at stats. Those who pay to have them compiled set the parameters ahead of time.

25 years ago a state tax board dude came to my town--his only reason was to find small businesses guilty of not paying state sales tax, so he could prove to the Cali State Board that it would be beneficial if he moved here and regulated Northern Cali in person.

This big burly scary dude was using a real estate agent (my friend) to find a house for himself and his family. My real estate friend told him to lay off us in a joking way....but it scared the big burly dude.

long story short, He reversed course, i.e. stopped hounding me---in fact, he showed me the end stat of the magic equation to prove me innocent--- told me to fill in the blanks of sales, orders and payments so that it would equal the necessary end stat.

I never saw him again. lol

Stats are used to get loans, grants for medical research, money for road work, extra tax benefits, prove stupid points, keep the big dudes in power...and/or

to hide the truth. shrug

Don't let it get you down...
there only castles burning...lol

Mulroy is the absolute wrong person Memphis needs right now.
Ben Crump running around seeing how much money he can bleed off the city by stirring things up on behalf of criminals is wrong at this point in time.
And if the current rumors are true, and the Police Chief keeps her job with the new Administration, it will be a head scratcher.
