Blast from the not too distant past
Before the Northwestern win, this was Chicago States closest crack at a Big 10 school—the Illini.

Heartbreaking loss, but still a great showing for the Cougars a few years back.

RE: Blast from the not too distant past
The blast is truly a great moment from 2005 in the Mid Continent era. Chicago State playing UMKC. Chicago State hit a 3 with 1.9 seconds to tie it. Then they stole the inbounds and shot from beyond half court and hit it for the win. 2 3 pointers in 1.9 seconds to win from 3 down.

I’m 90% sure the winning shot was by Kevin Jones, son of Chicago State coach Kevin Jones.

Incidentally, UMKC finished one game out of the lead in the Mid Continent conference, wound up as 2 seed, where they caught a hot Oakland team that went on to win the conference and make the NCAA tournament with only a 12-18 record. There, Oakland also won their play in game before losing to North Carolina.

Chicago State was 7-9 in the Mid Con that year and beat Valparaiso in the first round of the tournament, and were upset by Oakland themselves in the semis by 3.

2 years before the Chicago State men got their first Big 10 victory, the ladies had their own Big 10 victory. Also on the road, of course, the Cougars beat Wisconsin in Madison in an overtime game. 70-63.

2013, Chicago State hosted the Great West Conference tournament and won it.

Here are the highlights from the Cougars 8 point, semi final win over Texas Pan American.
At the 1:40 mark, post game comments from coach Tracy Dildy begin.

The next night after UTPA game, Chicago State won the championship game versus Houston Baptist. It was their 3rd straight win, and the third time they beat Houston Baptist that season.

Those previous wins were actually important, because HBU and Chicago State tied in the conference standings, but since CSU won both matchups they received the higher seed.

Houston Baptist then had to play an extra game in the GWC tournament, while Chicago State had a first round bye. Houston Baptist made the final, but it was the Huskies third game in as many days. The HBU wins in the first and second round were hard fought on top of everything else, with HBU beating Utah Valley by 2 in 2 OT, and their semi final game being a 1 point win over NJIT.

Chicago lead the gassed Huskies by 19 at halftime and HBU never got closer than 15, for a 75-60 Cougar victory.

Here are the game highlights of the conference tournament championship, with Tracy Dildy’s comments following.

As Great West Tournament Champions, CSU went on to play in the CIT versus Illinois-Chicago that season.

The men won the Great West tournament in 2013 and advanced to the post season, as I talked about in the post above. But that’s nothing compared to the Cougar women’s beat season in school history, with a 24-10 record.

But the Cougar women beat them in the race for the first Great West Championship. Not only did they win the tournament, they also won the regular season title with an 11-1 conference record.

The squad played a challenging early schedule, and played some quality teams close, but came away with losses are often as wins. At the beginning of January, the Cougars stood at 6-8, with a 2 point loss to Northwestern, a 14 point loss at #20 ranked Iowa State, a 1 point loss at Memphis, and a 4 point loss at Auburn.

But playing that schedule paid off when conference play came around, and the Cougar ladies promptly ran off 12 straight wins, 11 within the conference circuit. After their sole conference loss to South Dakota, the Cougars began another winning streak. This one would carry them thru the final conference road games, thru the conference tournament championship, and several games deep into the Women’s Basketball Invitational.

I’m the GWC tournament, the Cougars downed Utah Valley first, and the Fighting Sioux of North Dakota in the title game. From there, the moved into WBI play. They cruised past Eastern Illinois on the road to move out of the first round. Next up was another road game at #1 seed Cleveland State, who they put down by 18.

The Cougars season ending loss came on the road in Bakersfield, California, where the Roadrunners nipped the Lady Cougars by 1 in OT. That put them at 24-10, and 18-2 since early January.

And so, the Cougar women’s basketballs best season in school history ended in the Final 4 of the WBI Tournament. Cal State Bakersfield went on to fall in the WBI Championship game.

If I can find some clips of that season, I will post them.

Nice article about summer league basketball being played at Chicago State, when a rookie Michael Jordan showed up and called Isiah Thomas to come play as well.

The Bulls Reggie Theus came and played sometimes as well. He later coached NM State, and coached against Chicago State recently as head coach (and AD) at Bethune Cookman. Full circle…

Well, Tracy Dildy was there playing, after his first year in college I believe, but he played against the pros that day and learned a few things:)

Not sure where Tracy is this season, because he is no longer at Detroit Mercy as of this year. He spent at least 4 years there though.

David Holston is still one of the top 3 point shooters in college basketball history. Nearly all of the people ahead of him came after he played. Almost every one had to pass him.
