Exclamation Alabama taking Linguist off of UB's hands
I thought we were going to be stuck with him for another year. I can't believe anyone wanted him. I wouldn't hire him to run a lemonade stand.

The only problem is Mark Alnutt is hiring the next coach. Maybe we'll actually get lucky for once.

Not a good look when the league has multiple head coaches leave for assistant positions elsewhere...schools have to start investing more into their coaching staff or drop down to FCS.

I think their fans are happy they didn't invest more in him, glad they didn't have to pay a big buyout to fire him.

Who was the other one? I think Kent St's coach a couple years ago but wasn't he sort of stuck at .500?

Was there a buyout for Linguist so at least Buffalo gets a little money?

It was right around .500, but skewed by the 2-10 first season as he started to right the ship, then the Covid year, and all of it over balanced by the death march schedule of three top end P5 games every season. He was over .500 in MAC play, actually took KSU to the MAC championship game two years ago, and had a well earned reputation nationally as an offensive innovator. That got him recommended to Coach Prime at Colorado where he had that offense rolling at a high level until Coach P mysteriously demoted him mid-season, and then the offense sputtered miserably for the rest of the season. Season ends, and San Diego St. quickly snaps him up to be their head coach, and he happily exits the sideshow in Boulder. He’s a quality guy, nice family, and almost all Kent fans are rooting for him. Few begrudge him taking a 7 figure OC job at a P5, and are happy he’s parlayed that into a MWC HC job with a promising future at a school that can afford to pay him what he’d never earn in the MAC.

It's not like it's a MAC-only thing ... South Alabama's HC was just hired as the Alabama Defensive OC.

More money, and the old "you can't be promoted straight from a Coordinator job" rule of thumb no longer applies, so it's more Go5 HC -> P5 Coordinator -> P5 HC than the old P5 Coordinator -> Go5 HC -> P5 HC.

Think you are a little harsh on Linguist. Bama didn't hire him because he is a jerk. He may not have been quite ready for the HC, but he is a solid football guy.

Some ADs will only hire those with prior head coaching experience for a head coach role, so it's not uncommon for a P5 coordinator to take a pay cut to be a head coach at a G5 to get it on their resume and then jump back to the P5.

I neither stated nor implied that he's a jerk. He's incompetent. You need to look no further than his last game. He kicked a field goal down 24-8 with six minutes left in the game. Then this defensive mastermind let EMU get three first downs and run out the clock. He didn't use any of his timeouts.

He was completely in over his head from Day 1 to the last day.
