How do you get egos to play as a team?
The more talented players you have, the more egos you have. What should be done?
Bobby Cox of the Atlanta Braves was known for his ability to manage players with talent and an ego. Baseball?

Dean Smith told Michael Jordan when he was a freshman that the only the best five defensive players will start. Now Michael was a different breed but he bought in

Is it harder to get 5 1-and-dones to play together coming into the college game or 5 5th-years who are essentially looking out for #1?

Was he?
With all that talent he had for so long, how many WS did he win during that period?

I don’t know, it is a valid question. Only one. If you consider WS wins a measure of success….

Then there are millions of idiots as he is constantly listed as a choker who cannot win the big one.
Had what many believe was the greatest starting staff in MLB history and lost every game at Turner field in 1998 NLCS
13 division titles in 14 years and 1 WS titles.

RE: How do you get egos to play as a team?
I don't know if the players are getting paid NIL money, and if they are, then I don't know how much money each player is receiving. However, basketball has been and will be an ego sport. One ball, it's a less emphasis on playing as a team, you rely on certain players to make plays at certain times. Basketball: It's the only sport where people compare the greatest player of all time (Jordon) to LeBron. It's the only sport where older generations will knock on the current generations (vice versa) and determined which generation is better. You don't see comparison in the NFL (other than QB), but you also don't see it in the MLB and NHL. Why? Those three sport leagues rely on team where basketball you don't.
So it's tough. It's even tougher when your head coach has an ego in himself.
The toughest thing for Memphis is their conference play. Because I don't believe Penny has really respected the conference opponents/coaches other than Houston during his tenure. For the players, the resume is really over. They're a tournament team unless they screw things up throughout the remainder of the season. They're going to be favored throughout the remainder of the season (other than game at FAU). The reason why I'm saying that is because if Memphis was in a bigger conference, they'll get exposed based on ego. Everybody losses during conference play. There are only 23 teams that haven't lost a conference game yet. Memphis needs to play a game against Purdue, or UConn, or Kentucky now. And when they're done playing those teams, then they need to see Wisconsin, or Creighton, or Tennessee just 3 days later. The benefit for Memphis is they don't have to deal with the "gauntlet" of a conference schedule like those teams are in previous conferences. Bad news: it does create ego.
