RE: JMU admissions applications are way up
Love to see the increase in applications and continued growth of the university, but hope university leadership reconsiders the test optional admissions policy. Texas just rolled theirs back citing testing as being an important indicator of success. https://www.statesman.com/story/news/edu...929632007/

A little more on that for the dukes

https://x.com/mualphaxi/status/1767218614506029482?s=20

"University of Texas data dump on test-optional students. I've been waiting for this! Ivies will never publish out of embarrassment, but UT did.

Test-optional admits had a first semester GPA 0.86 points lower than those who submitted SAT/ACT. A whole grade!

The median SAT of those who asked not to have their score considered for admission was nearly 300 points lower than those who wanted them considered (1160 vs 1420). That's more than a standard deviation!"

It is well done and worth the time.

At the AUBc
- high energy from the moment you walk in
- friendly / happy greeters
- the band is blaring away
- great videos on the video board
- dynamic speakers
- if you are an alum, definitely tugging at the emotions, for shore --

then - very good breakout sessions along the majors.

lunch was packed and a bit of a cluster, but got through it.

My only advice, the more current student participation the better. Great kids. Well spoken, happy, balanced. Would have helped to have them talk about what they like about JMU and why JMU. Some did, but more would have been better.

Definitely agree on AUBC atmosphere. It helped kick off the day after a rain soaked drive down to JMU. It was nice that the rain broke while we were in there. By the end of the day, it was bright blue skies over Harrisonburg. We never even needed to use the shuttles all day. Of course, it helped that we knew our way around campus.

Curious about which breakout sessions you attended. We went first to the Honors College session which was great. The students there did an amazing job selling JMU and the Honors College.

Then we cut back across campus to the College of Integrated Science and Engineering Open House. That started at 9:30 I believe and ran until 11:15. We arrived around 10:50 and I think it had died down by then. My daughter was able to talk to the head of the CS Department one-on-one for about 15 minutes. Dr. Simmons really had an impact and did a great job selling the program.

Then we stopped by Shenandoah Hall to take a look at the dorm.

After that, we did lunch at E-Hall around 11:40 taking Top Dawg's sage advice to eat early. It wasn't too bad arriving, but by the time we left I could see how you'd consider it a cluster.

After lunch, we walked around East Campus a bit and then went to the CS breakout session. I'm not a STEM person and didn't really understand much of the technical points of the presentation, but they let five or six students speak. They all spoke well and were definitely dynamic and engaging. I'd say this was the one that sealed the deal for my daughter. We went to a similar presentation at UVA Engineering Open House last year and after, my daughter walked away with no intention of applying to UVA. Underwhelming to say the least. She did one at VT in the fall and she said that one was better than UVA's but it obviously didn't sell her on it.

We rounded out the day at the Study Abroad breakout. Understandably, there wasn't much about how great JMU is as the students talked about their experiences abroad.

Closed the day out with a trip to the bookstore and handing over the deposit check at UREC. She was smiling ear-to-ear after that.

Best of luck to you as you navigate this process!

Happy to read that your Choices experience helped your daughter see & feel the true nature of JMU…the JMU we all love and admire. 04-cheers

From using the AUBC as a staging event, to breakouts with the Honor’s College, Engineering, East Campus dining and dorms…there’s just so much that defines the JMU of 2024 that didn’t exist 30 years ago, however the essence and spirit remains the same. JMU is >>>> UVA & VT. 02-13-banana

Definitely different than our days. ISAT was trailers my Freshman year. Convo and the arboretum were the only things on the now called "East" campus. Bridgeforth wasn't much to be envied, but those of us who showed up knew what the future could hold.

Watched the championship game tonight with the future Duke and she immediately turned to me and said I want my 18th Birthday and graduation gift to be a trip to the first round game. After all, she was seven last time "we" made it. She said "we" and I told her that she is now allowed to say "we" after her flirtations with ACC and SEC schools.

I told her we'd need to see where it is based on my work schedule.

Yeah there’s simply no way that testing should not be mandatory for admission. I expect this failed experiment to end soon

We all know that a final four run or a football national championship increases exposure, then applications and then acceptances.

Our applications are way up this year, do we get a higher committment % after the success of our football team and the NCAA hoops bid?

Interesting question. If yield does shoot up, it could cause havoc for admissions office, and JMU may be scrambling for more housing if they extend too many offers and the commit rate is higher than anticipated. Or perhaps if a lot of early decision offers are accepted, they might scale back regular admission offers.

It seems like this is sort of what happened last year with housing shortage.

I can tell you that I chose JMU in the spring of 1994 over UofR, Villanova, and Davidson mostly because of JMU making NCAA tournament that year. Little did I know it would be 20 years until we made it back.

I expect they will target the same # of incoming freshman and transfers next year so if yield is up on early decision, it will be a significant scale back of regular admissions.

25-26 when the new village hall comes online might change enrollment strategy. But there is no on campus or off campus student housing coming online before Fall 2024.

There are no off campus housing projects underway? Curious if you are including private development...my field, so if there is an opportunity there...

Underway (or at least approved) yes, but nothing going up right now. 4 large developments near Sentara park are in the works that are designed to be college housing. But none have broken ground, so even 25-26 might be too soon.

The city and county has been prioritizing family and young professional housing over the last few years. So if you come to Harrisonburg and see housing being built, that is likely what it is.

I'm curious...if something is a private development, how does the city and county prioritize family/yuppie housing? Are we talking TIF money, or do they put "multifamily / student housing" at the bottom of the pile when it comes getting zoning and permits?

By not approving rezonings if the project is slated for student housing. Our zoning code is archaic (from the 90s) so most large projects have to go through rezoning. Multifamily housing is encouraged, just not that designed primarily for students.

The city has approved student housing though, just in very specific parts of the city (mostly around Sentara Park). Also most recently, new student housing has just shifted old student housing into affordable housing.

Bonely is disappointed in you, Grammer Police.

You can at least pretend you understand how hard it was for Kelsey to have to make the choice between potentially tarnishing the legacy of his critically-acclaimed series and making enough money as an actor to continue to enjoy his established lifestyle.

Please rewatch Cheers, Frasier, and Frasier (2023) and repost your opinion regarding whether or not you think David Hyde Pierce's choice not to participate was justified.
