JMU 61/65/60

Last night's style points victory versus Coastal moved us up 5 spots in the Net Rankings.

Perhaps a good reason to keep the walk-ons minutes to a minimum. (they gave back 8 points from our 46 point lead after entering w/ about 5 minutes left.)

I *think* there's a cap on point margin factor, but perhaps not on the "efficiency" metrics. There is also an argument that keeping starters rested/fresh can pay dividends for upcoming games. And more players gaining experience potentially builds bench depth also.

Yeah- I'm all about resting the starters and giving the rotational/young scholarship guys more time at the end in a blowout. It's the dynamic of having 4 walk-ons and Roberson on the court at the same time for several minutes that hurts our efficiency factor. I'm sure Coach B has weighed the pros and cons and feels it's the right thing to do, so if that's the case-I'm fine with it. In the end, it's a nice problem to have.

Yep that sounds like the kind of rule the NCAA would come up with

The idea was that it wouldn't be Kansas, Duke, Kentucky and UConn in the Maui Invitational or Preseason NIT every year.

RE: Men's Net Rankings
It is unlikely, but we will be favored in our next 10 games before the finals in the conference tournament, and if we win all 10, that is 30 wins.

Will they leave out a 30 win team with a NET of say 50-55?

We are still 63 in the NET after yesterday’s games. A win against the best team in the MAC, Akron, would help, but 3 losses already in the sun belt hurts.

Winning the next 10 is obviously the biggest challenge with 5 on the road and 2 in the tournament

RE: Men's Net Rankings
If the question is, would the selection committee leave JMU out at 30-4?
The answer is, Yes they would.

The Dukes have one of the weakest schedules in the nation at #336 and only have a single quad one win. The Dukes simply have not been tested nearly enough and, sadly, I think they are good enough if they had been tested to post a worthy resume. Byington has to do better in the OOC scheduling to offset some of the dregs in Sun Belt play.

The committee will give no merit to racking up W’s against weaklings. Take that to the bank.

Gotta win the tourney in Pensacola 04-rock

Not sure about that, but let’s win the 10 first. No team that has won more than 28 games has ever been left out of the NCAA tournament. CofC was on the bubble last year with 29 wins but went ahead and won the CAA tournament. Hope we can do the same and take care of business in Pensacola.

It is dumb that every year the 8th place team from like the Big 12 with a 17-13 record gets in over a 25 or 26 win team from a smaller conference. The fans of the 17-13 team probably don’t even count it as a successful season, but they get in. Right now Lunardi has 9 teams in from the SEC and Big 12. 9!!

RE: Men's Net Rankings
Agreed that it is dumb for middling and even losing power conference teams to make it. They’ve proven they aren’t championship worthy over many opportunities in the schedule.

It isn’t that JMU’s schedule has been weak, it is record-breaking weak at #336 right in the middle of UM-Baltimore County and Campbell. It would be Interesting to see JMu’s SOS over the years for a good comparison.

Byington doesn’t have any misperceptions about having to win the Sun Belt tourney.

Hope Akron wins out and gets the MAC autobid. That might help a bit.

RE: Men's Net Rankings
If we were to win out until finals and a few things happen I think there would be outside shot at an at large. Would need most of the following to happen.

Akron wins out and wins MAC
App State wins out and wins SBC
Michigan State finishes strong and gets NEt in teens
Southern Illinois finishes strong and wins conference
We beat a surging Troy in semis

Probably need all those things to happen and I think it would put us in conversation at least.

RE: Men's Net Rankings
The Sunbelt won round two 10-2 after going 5-7 in round one of the challenge. The two losses were by one point each. There were five double digit win games and one by nine points. Round one was at the MAC schools and the match ups were based on projections. Round two was at the SB schools and the pairings were done using more current net rankings. All of the SB top four won by double digits except App who needed OT. Impressive showing by the SB in the challenge.

Hopefully Akron can win out and become Q2. Southern Illinois is on the cusp of being a Q2 win as well.
