4703 would've won 8 of the last 20 titles if we made it to the final round.

That got me thinking... how is scoring done in Rifle. I searched "collegiate rifle scoring" and stumbled upon the NCAA Rifle site.

Here's the National Championship history since 1980. Looks like West Virginia and Alaska-Fairbanks have dominated over the years.

NCAA RIFLE CHAMPIONSHIP HISTORY

Quote:From 1980 to 2004, the championship consisted of 120 shots by each competitor in smallbore, and 40 shots per competitor in air rifle. (160 shots per team member)

Since 2005, the championship has consisted of 60 shots for both smallbore and air rifle, equaling a total of 120 shots per team member.

From 1980 to 2004, scores were in the low 6,000s.

From 2005 on, scores have been in the 4,600-4,700 range. In 2022 Kentucky scored 4,736. That's the highest I saw.

The average score over in the scoring change era is 4,678.

However, the first score in the 4,700 range was in 2015. Since then, the winning average score is 4,709.

Saved me the trouble. Right as I read the score I said to myself, "self, how is this competition scored I wonder".

Thanks! 04-cheers

Frankly, in todays politically charged climate and with the rise of the faint of heart on one side of the spectrum who want to destroy guns I'm surprised there's still a rifle competition in any school anymore.
