that doesn't matter. Rick's been around coaching way longer than Penny.

And yet they have similar struggles. Given the transfer portal and NIL, both are dealing with new rosters. Both seem to want to win and both seem to have a greater desire than their players. Both are frustrated with the gaps in defensive knowledge at this level. Grassroots basketball has decreased the focus on screening, defending, boxing out - key concepts for good teams.

Rick is the best to ever walk the sidelines IMO. Great motivator and great Xs and Os guy. Possibly challenged in that category by Brad Stevens. John Wooden, Bobby Knight, Coach K, Roy, Uconn's Calhoun all have had surperior talent to the teams Rick has coached. Just my 2 cents. Pitino's struggles and Izzo's struggles tell me all I need to know about how much a coach can do in today's game. Similar to QB in NFL, NCAA BBall HC gets too much credit and too much blame.

That being said, neither Penny or Pitino want to defer blame. They hate this season more than anyone on this forum.

Pitino tried to keep a few players on the roster when he took over including Jones and AJ Storr who is at Wisconsin now. St John's wasnt going to win and doesn't have the same NIL budget as other schools. The other schools after Jones(Kentucky, Xavier, etc) arent exactly **** programs.
