Buffalo and Kent are rebuilding. Toledo reloaded, but still doesn't have the talent they had last year. Akron is underperforming preseason expectations. In prior years when a Kent, Akron, Ohio was having a down year there were other teams like a Ball State or BGSU that would have a good year to help compensate.

This year there just isn't much of a middle to the conference. You have Akron and Toledo who are good, but not great. After that mostly everyone else ranges from bad to horrendous. No real middle when before the MAC had a strong middle. In 2019, when the MAC was a top 10 conference, only one school was 200+ ranked in Kenpon (WMU @#255). This year I'm counting 8 teams. That last place WMU in 2019 would be ranked ahead of 6 MAC teams this season.

Men's and women's side, the MAC is awful this year. Let's hope it's a blip and not the new normal.

Got to do better with NIL and transfer portal. These things have hurt most MAC programs. I think Toledo in particular, and Miami football have handled this better than others.

Miami's having a decent basketball year by their recent history.

Cochran on his 3rd MAC team and year 2 at Toledo. Lorenston from St Louis in 2nd year with Toledo. Maddox in 2nd year at Toledo from Cal State Fullerton. Ben Wight hardly plays but was a starter at Bill and Mary. Shumate and Milner were transfers on last seasons roster but played 3 years at UT. Ray J Dennis was an out going starter.

Still built this team on recruits with Ford, Brcic, Lewis, Simmons and Wilson all frosh and hopefully stay. Moss a 3rd year HS recruit

RE: MAC MBB NET Rankings through 20 February
Despite having a ton of all conference players in men's and women's basketball and football, Toledo has done a much better job of retaining their stars than other teams. In addition, they have brought in some talent. For most of the the conference the portal has overall been a big negative. Miami football has lost 4 or 5 stars every year, but we also have brought in guys who have been MAC stars to replace them. So we kind of have broken even in that sport.

However, our women's basketball team lost all 5 starters, including 3 who were averaging more than 15 ppg last year. This year we have a far better coaching staff, but they have basically an entire new roster. OU lost probably the second best player in the MAC who was just a sophomore. CMU lost their best player who was a freshman. The year before they lost their star player to Iowa. BG lost 3 starters. NIU lost a first team all MAC center. Two years ago UB lost the MAC POY ( and perhaps the best player ever in the MAC) and the MAC FOY. Toledo has like 8 girls who are 4th or 5th year players. They have three 5th year starters

No doubt UMass is going to be a regular upper division team in MAC basketball.

MAC is only taking its top 8 to the conference tournament, no need to worry about the bottom 5 teams bringing the schedule down.

4 teams you play 1x, the other 7 you play x2.

Toledo played WMU, BSU, EMU and CMU 1x. Ohio, Miami, Akron, Kent, BG, UB, and NIU 2x.

Adding 2 teams probably makes the schedule back to 20 games (which it was a couple seasons ago). 6 teams x1, 7 teams x2.

Okay cool. 18 is the same as the A10. I think that could be doable for our fans if we're able to try and keep the OOC as is (or try to improve it). 20 might be a bit tougher on our more hardcore basketball fans, but eh. They can get used to it.

Thanks!

Personally, I see no value in a 20 game schedule. There are so few opportunities for MAC schools to pick up Q1 or Q2 wins in conference play these days. Akron will finish MAC play with 0 Q1 opponents and only 1 Q2 opponent. That means 17 of Akron's 18 games were classified as Q3 or Q4.

Allowing more OOC games at least allows an opportunity for schools to build a March resume. Even if the hopes of securing an at-large is a long shot.
