I hope that Penny will leave this place, a place that's in his blood. Take a job at another school, and absolutely kill it there. Penny is a player getter, whichever program he goes to will get the attention, AND TV exposure, and increases in attendance at home, and away games.

RE: Shots fired!!!!!
There have been red lights flashing in a number of areas for awhile; you are free, as always, to disagree. But an area of concern should be the trajectory of recruiting—going from seemingly everyone wanting to play here to it being difficult to land top HS recruits . . . from Memphis! I understand that transfers and NIL have changed the nature of the recruiting game and the strategies required, but I see overall decline. Even when we “seemingly “ hit the jackpot at the end of last year’s recruiting season, it shouldn’t come down to such.

I was afraid he might end like home town hero Clyde Drexler in Houston. Unfortunately it now looks like it may end worse than that. I hope Penny can self evaluate and understand where he has failed and can either correct his shortcomings or graciously step aside. He continued denial and casting blame elsewhere is not serving him well.

Well said, and I agree with it. I wasn't surprised he was hired, though. At the time, it felt to me like if he were ever to take over, that was the time. I was excited, as so many others were. I still believe in him, but that belief is fading quickly with the steady stream of issues, especially his penchant for throwing everyone but himself under the bus.

Bad, bad look.

I think it will be for the NBA if and when that happens.

I’d just like to see what he’d do when the East gang have finally run out of eligibility. I’m hoping this Dandridge situation is a wake up call. He’s taken care of this guy for far too long

(02-24-2024 09:54 PM)mapdude Wrote:  Can't post the entire article but I can post a part of it. The most significant part. Let me know if this is not allowed...

"There has been the revolving door of assistants and staff members, and Hardaway's tendency to surround himself with a cavalry of loyal yes men who aren't willing to – or can't – give him the hard truths that could turn him into the kind of coach he has the potential to be.

And then came this season, with its last-minute transfers and roster fluctuations and chemistry issues and, eventually, a collapse that has Memphis likely needing to win the AAC tournament to get to the NCAA tournament after being ranked No. 10 in the national polls in January.

At least Memphis got a run to the national championship game out of the Derrick Rose SAT controversy.

So how much is too much?

That’s the uncomfortable question everybody who cares about this program has to ask today because none of this is conducive to winning and all of this is pulling Memphis further away from the program Hardaway claims he wants it to be. What could once be swept aside as his inexperience shouldn’t be anymore.

While Hardaway considers himself a target, nobody else in college basketball has gotten the kind of free pass he has gotten from Memphis administrators.

Yes, he cares deeply about the city and the university. He remains a legendary figure here. It’s why he pursued the job in the first place. It's why everyone has been willing to put up with all this. It's why the athletic department has had trouble reeling him in. Hardaway is the rare coach without a national title that has more power than his boss.

But that isn’t enough anymore. Hardaway’s hiring wasn’t preordained, however nice that sounded given the connection he shares with Larry Finch. This is a job — a really important one to this city and this university — and the way he’s doing it is unacceptable.

It’s time for him to take control of his program, or lose the right to run it."

Absolute truth, and actually not near as harsh as it could have been. Maybe that why LV is again looking for a new job - in addition to the revolving door for Penny's assistants. No other coach since Cal could have this performance record over 6 yrs & survive as the Memphis coach.

I have long thought the same as you on the bolded part. However, he now has Ashton to coddle for the next 2-3 years, so it might go beyond the East HS gang....

Exactly. This says more about the state of the program than anything else.

This whole thing just makes me sad and exhausted... which, I guess, is better than apathetic. But, that ship is sailing dangerously close to these shores.

I'll reserve judgement for after the season is over.

Serious question...you know this for absolute fact, or is this just fan board pontification?

You still want Ron Hunter ? He’s about to be 13-13 and 4-10 in the AAC. Getting beat by UAB at home

Get your facts straight.

Weisman hired Lesley Ballin to be his attorney. They filed an injunction in court against the NCAA, AND the University of Memphis seeking a temporary retraining order to stop the university from not letting him play.

If the University of Memphis had, indeed, held him out, they would have been liable for a contempt of court charge and possible penalties. Weisman and Ballin tied the U of M's hands in the matter.

The U of M then held him out of games AFTER Weisman and Ballin dropped their injunction in court and only after the legal stuff was dismissed.

So, get the facts straight....U of M did not thumb their noses at the NCAA and say "'F u, we playing him anyway", they were reacting to a legal issue brought against them by Weisman and Ballin. Now, it was not the smartest thing to do in the long run, but at the time, they had no alternative path to follow that had no repercussions to consider.

Penny isn’t required by law to play Wiseman or anyone else. That’s the dumbest argument anyone could make.

DNP - coach’s decision

Only people he must play apparently are Jayden and Ashton. And maybe Lomax
