SEC ends bluff and sets ‘25 football opponents

Did the SEC follow through on its threat to go to 1 permanent rival? Nope. They are continuing to release schedules 1 year at a time as they “survey the changing landscape of college football.”

This move is pretext against anti-tampering suits from the ACC.

Florida State and Clemson will be playing in the SEC that season.

RE: SEC ends bluff and sets ‘25 football opponents
If I'm the SEC, just go to flex protect for up to 3 protected rivals and they can still play everyone at least twice in 5 years with 8 conference games while playing select teams (secondary rivals, "divisional opponents") 3x in 5 years.

They can still release the schedule and matchups annually how they've been doing it, but at least announce the protected annual rivalries. That way, if they go to 9 games, then they can adjust the format to allow everyone playing at least 2x every 4 years instead of 5 years and still maintain their annual rivals, but adjust their opponents played 3x.

16 Team, 8 Game Conference Schedule:
0 Protected = 10 opponents 3x in 5 years
1 Protected = 7 opponents 3x in 5 years
2 Protected = 4 opponents 3x in 5 years
3 Protected = 1 opponent 3x in 5 years
- Optional: If both agree, teams can choose to play each other 4x in 5 years
- If agreed, number of opponents played 3x in 5 years reduced by 2 for each team played 4x in 5 years

16 Team, 9 Game Conference Schedule:
0 Protected = 6 opponents 3x in 4 years
1 Protected = 4 opponents 3x in 4 years
2 Protected = 2 opponents 3x in 4 years
3 Protected = 0 opponents 3x in 4 years

This is what I thought would be best for the SEC with 8 game conference schedule, but may not be perfect (didn't attempt to create any 4x in 5 year matchups, but certainly possible). Obviously the SEC and it's teams would know who wants to play annually and then can fill in the rest.

Perhaps that's part of it, but another part is the staring contest with ESPN in the "more money for a 9th Conference game" discussion. 9 Conference games means more Texas v Alabama and LSU v OU, or FSU vs LSU perhaps, so it's potentially worth quite a bit to ESPN, whereas if we just do 1 year by year schedules then none of the schools will get too worked up about things until the schedule gets sorted.

Just looked at schedule, I’m SHOCKED that we’re still not playing Georgia again. /sarcasm

Once in 14 years. Come on, SEC office.

Well if they stick with 8, you get everyone 2 times in 5 years, 2 teams every year and 4 games for either secondary rivals or balancing the schedules.
In 2024, they tried to make sure everyone got 4 schools from the top half and 4 from the bottom half to balance the schedules. Texas, OU, Texas A&M, LSU, Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Georgia were top half. Tennessee has been down and so were in the bottom half with UK, Vandy, USCe, Ole Miss, Miss. St., Arkansas, Missouri.

South Carolina needs either Florida or Georgia, so use GoBuckeye's rivals and to give everyone two add:
South Carolina-Florida
South Carolina-Kentucky
LSU-Texas A&M (instead of A&M-Ark)
Arkansas-Missouri
Arkansas-Miss. St.

Barely!
""...We continue to monitor changes across college sports as they relate to future scheduling," SEC commissioner Greg Sankey said in a prepared statement. "Continuing with our current format for the 2025 season provides additional time to understand the impact of the changes happening around us as we determine the appropriate long-term plan for SEC football scheduling....""
