On3 was created by the same guy who created Rivals then sold it, created 247 then sold it, now he's onto his next scam...I mean next big thing.

The actual number, the ranking, doesn't mean much at our level. There might be "some" parallel between ranking order and on field performance, but it's a loose connection at best.

Much of the fascination about these rankings comes from a lack of understanding about how they actually work, and what these classes actually look like 2 to 3 years down the line when a significant portion of those recruits no longer attend the school they signed to on signing day.

And honestly, because the class rankings are all largely weighted by quantity, that should be enough reason to brush them aside and say "hey nice job, but let's see what this looks like down the line".

You'll notice that no one ever does a retroactive of these, for obvious reasons. When you look back, you see a lot more wasted potential than you thought you would. A lot of the main guys you were counting on have transferred, and the guys coming in from the portal are all "used cars" so to speak and have a blue book value that's often better than what they end up producing on the field. It's always a gamble. It is a true secondhand market and sometimes you get lucky, but more often than not there is a reason why that car ends up in your lot.

I like to see us in the top third of the rankings, but by no means am I pumping my fist if we are #1. I know it has little meaning. I would criticize my own school if they made a big deal about it on social media.

Generally means squat. Southern Miss has had top 3 rated classes for several years in a row, and not worth a crap in football.

At least someone likes your class. Congrats! Its better than no one liking it.
