Not a rumor, but I'm putting one coach out there:
Pat Kelsey of College of Charleston

Why would a coach leave a place for a lower salary?

Honestly, there are some P5 castoffs that were more victims of unrealistic expectations vs poor coaching that we should consider.

Pretty sure CoC pays more than JMU, and Kelsey doesn't have to share resources with football.

He would be an excellent hire, just don't think it likely.

edit: He has a base of $1mm with a $1mm buyout.

RE: MBB Coaching candidates and rumors
I didn't know his salary. Just thought of a good mid major coach I wouldn't mind being our coach.
If we can't even afford that guy, I'm feeling less and less hopeful about our future.
We are one bad decision back to the drawing board.

I really hate being negative about it, but this is damn frustrating. So much turnover in such a short time. It's hard to believe we hit a home run with everything.
So far Chesney appears to be an absolute home run.

Really want basketball to pick up where it left off, but with all the departures and now HC.... it feels like a rebuild all over again. And that's if we get the right guy.

If you're going to root for JMU then get used to it. If Chesney wins, some P5 team will hire him too. If our next basketball coach wins, a P5 team will hire that guy too. It is what it is.

Could definitely afford him if he didn't have a 1.2M buyout.

$500K coming from By leaving. Sounds like time to spend some fresh NCAA units.

Aren't those paid out over a 6 year plan? Can't spend money we won't have soon.

I'd like to see us take a hard look at Griff Aldrich.

Love Kelsey too...but he was last years Byington. His next step is up to P5.

And split 14 ways. Not a significant amount of money unless you are a P6 and have multiple teams in the tourney.

Nothing wrong with not "even" being able to afford Pat Kelsey. Charleston is a solid mid-major that doesn't have football to spend money on, it'll likely take a P6 to lure him away and he may get that this year. There are plenty of other good options out there.

One I think could be an interesting possibility and that also would really ruffle some feathers is one of the rumored finalists from last time around: Dustin Kerns. He gets $300k a year, we could give him a solid raise and a job with better facilities and what should be a higher ceiling.
