According to their own website, athletic fees are $2,362 dollars (https://www.jmu.edu/ubo/student-accounts...down.shtml) so if if someone attends JMU and graduates in four years...they will have paid $18,896 in just athletic fees (more if they attended any summer sessions). That's a significant cost of and a contributor to the college debt issue...
...but they will only pay $52,000 TOTAL in four years...way way less than many schools and less than all of our VA academic/experience/sports peers ....(sorry radford and odu, you don't make the peer list due to academics)
That's kind of my point, it could be $32,000 total if they weren't being asked to bankroll the athletic program.
They could just charge 52k in tuition, kick back the same amount to the athletic dept, have zero student fees, and not make any lists, just like everyone else is doing. But the state makes them account for it separately. I don't see why this is so hard to understand. And as noted, it is a choice to enroll there.
If the government ever does start paying for college people won't believe how creative schools will get to fleece for that money, just like every other entity the government pays for.

In 2019-2020, the average student debt., after 4 years of college was 30,000.00 (approximately), regardless of student athletic fees.
The government, in its infinite wisdom, then “forgives” the student debt.
So in reality, college sports aren’t “funded by college students,” they’re funded by The U. S. Taxpayer who is forced to cover the forgiven debt of those whom couldn’t afford college in the first place.
Student loan debt crisis is a bit more complex and nuanced than that but sure.
And didn’t the plan to cover the student loans occur if you’ve been paying on your loans without missing a payment for 10 years? Student loans shouldn’t still be a debt you owe after 10 years in the “real world”, they should have already been paid off by then.

ODU is in the same USWR category JMU is. Granted JMU is higher, but everyone knows the rankings themselves are bogus. ODU is also Carnegie R1 classified for research. ODUs academics are just fine. We might not be that hard to get into, but Id put the education quality up against any public in the state sans UVA or WM.

Just wait until we crank those student fees even higher. You guys aren’t gonna know what hit you! We are the Dukes of JMU and we will spend, spend, spend our way to victory. Go Dukes!
