Historically academics play a pretty big role in realignment actually. TV market (and in some cases desperation) have eclipsed the academic angle lately but there's still a lot of pressure from administrators not to "associate" with so called lesser schools in their conferences. It's dumb but it's a factor

Higher education is in survival mode, the student loans drove over capacity and poor management of costs combined with smaller population of students. Plus the real kicker is the cost of "higher" education does make economic sense to the consumer/student and especially young men. Full carpenters can earn 100k as well as other skilled tradesmen, Paying 70k,80k or 100k, you damn well better have an understanding of how much you can earn.
