Nice donation, I know she advanced to a high rank but didn’t realize you could accumulate such wealth working for the military.

$6M Donation
A 30 year career especially during the years served does not. I am guessing she was frugal and also did consulting after her years of serving.

The consulting, utilizing years of connections, is where the money stream comes. God bless her.

That donation is not going to the football program, donations like this to a school are common.

Common? Wish that were true for JMU.

RE: $6M Donation
Wasn't it the largest single donation in JMU history? Pretty cool and inspiring.

You mean the thing that nobody is walking around thinking to themselves? Lordy ..

Awesome gift! Right up there with the kickass crystal collection and the $3M (1.5m match?) cholarship drive a few years ago

Agreed, given our alumni base size and general wealth, our overall giving back to JMU is pathetic. Hopefully this is something the new president makes a focus on and changes. Giving back culture needs to start the day the students arrive on campus for the first time.

Just shows how much more we need to do. Nick said this will help 40 students per year at $6000 per student. Seems it should go farther, but I guess with endowments, it's all about preserving principal.

Usually endowments distribute 4-5% of the 5 year moving average balance, so $240k a year would be after 5 years.

Also large endowment gifts typically only come in estate gifts, so not surprising this just happened for JMU (but should be more not far behind).
