It was not a pleasant experience. I was driving home from a friend's house at around 8 PM. It was just changing from light to dark. I was driving around 45 miles an hour in a 40 mile an hour zone when I saw 1 deer cross the road in front of me. I thought to myself "I'd better slow down or I might hit one". I got down to about 35 miles an hour and one ran out right in front of me. I slammed on the brakes but I still hit it. The worst part is that I had slowed down so much, and braked a bit before I hit it.....and it left the deer's back side completely destroyed but it was still alive. It's back hips and legs were broken, but I didn't hit it hard enough to do serious damage elsewhere. The only damage to my car was a bent liscense plate. For about 30 seconds it writhed around in pain, almost like a seizure. I was horrified. I got out of the car and was going to walk over to it, but it would just get scared and try to get up and walk away. But....it would try to get up and end up just sort of flopping because it couldn't use its back half. I was in Southern Maryland so my cell phone wasn't working. I drove back to my friend's house and we called the police. We all drove back to the site and met the officer there. The deer was still there. It couldn't move at all. He checked out my plates and did all the normal stuff, and then said "You guys go ahead and get out of here and I'll take care of business". I still have the site of the deer in my head. It wasn't very fun.

Dont let PETA know! I hit two deer a few years back. They tore the crap out of my Jeep. Think of it this way. Someone somewhere has some extra Venison. It makes killer Chilli.

Did it freeze up in your headlights, or just like run a split second ahead of you / into you?

hate it when that happens - I've missed a deer by a few inches before - scares the **** out of you if you're in that kind of tuned out state.

A relative of mine hit a deer while riding a motorcycle about 2 weeks ago...

Wow, hitting a dear is one of my biggest fears as a driver.

Larry, I am so sorry. I'm not sure that they actually work, but you can buy whistles that attach to the front of your car. They are supposed to emit a sound to alert the deer that you are approaching.

- rickheel - 09-03-2002 05:19 PM

I understand they do work. So does honking your horn or flashing your brights if they get the look.

- Jenibu - 09-03-2002 06:01 PM

Sorry Larry...

You could always move into the city to avoid deer...however, then you have to worry about pedestrians.

Man, ya'll sound like a bunch of treehuggers from New York or California. This is the south!! Man, in Mississippi we would have had that suckers throat cut, hide jerked off, & in the freezer in no time flat.

Bambi Burgers all around!

BTW, when someone calls(911/police) because they hit a deer. They are in such a panic mode, most have no idea what they hit they are to scared to go look.

The lesson here is if you see one deer, HIT THE BRAKES! They travel in packs.

I DID hit the brakes. I had just gotten down to 30-35 and the sucker ran out in front of me. I had no chance to stop or swerve around him. He just flew out in front of me.

I don't live in Southern Maryland. I was down there having a practice for my band. We're doing a show this Saturday.

- TurtleProtector - 09-03-2002 08:12 PM

you should have seen the redneck cop (nothing against rednecks btw.) who pulled up while we were on the side of the road.
I think after larry and I left the scene he spit out his dip and DID make jerky out of the thing... as a previous poster to thread suggested.

- PoohTerp - 09-03-2002 08:37 PM

larry and alex.. post/e-mail/pm the info for this saturday night. we want to come to nova after the game to hear you guys play and i want to start a thread on both md boards.

The place wher I live is swarming in deer. We have several that hang out on our property, deer trails through our woods, etc. Parks all around jammed with the critters. I drive slow. Haven't hit any yet. Mrs. T has had a few close calls, mainly because she tried to speed up when someone tailgated her.
