I really believe UMass needs to jump at the chance to be a football-only member of the MAC. That way they'll be in the position to move into a high profile conference when the dominoes fall.
We may see a northeastern football league develop:
Maine
New Hampshire
UMass
Rhode Island
Fordham
Stony Brook
Albany
We may see it stay the same.
The state school of it's respective state hasn't dropped since Vermont; it would be weird, but if RIU dropped, Fordham would probably be added.

It's clear that most of the North Division remnants (other than UMass) are looking to play a different level of football from a financial standpoint than the South Division members. With more southern schools like my own 49ers starting to play or upgrade, I think its only a matter of time before UMass will have to decide between sticking with their northern neighbors or being the northern outpost in FCS's best conference.

UMass can't even apply to become FBS until 2011, and it wouldn't take effect until 2014. There's a good chance Big East Football won't even exist in 2014. And the problem with the MAC continues to be that we don't want to be members in all sports, but if they put the screws to us there's nowhere else we could go once we've made the move. It's not a great situation to leap into.
The best case scenario for UMass is this:
CAA North
UMass
UNH
Maine
URI
move Villanova
move Delaware
add Fordham (or Stony Brook or Albany)
CAA South
Richmond
James Madison
William & Mary
Towson
add Old Dominion
add Georgia State
add Charlotte
You play the 6 other members of your own division plus 2 from the other division, only 1 game of which is an away game. So for UMass and URI, only 1 conference game will be an airplane game.
The problem is that it's not all about travel costs. URI is trying to sabotage everything because they want an easier conference but don't want to leave the New England state universities, so they're throwing up all this smoke about travel. Maine fortunately has figured out that there really isn't any possible conference arrangement that will keep them off an airplane, so they're coming around to trying to make this all work and not split. UNH won't leave if UMass and Maine won't leave, and UMass wants to be affiliated with both halves of the conference and keep it all intact.
Rhode Island though wants to split the conference regardless of whether there's a solution to the travel issue. They are the Iago in this play.
The critical thing is getting Villanova and Delaware moved to the North division. If that happens, even without the Fordham/Charlotte component, I think Maine and UNH will stay on board and Rhode Island will be... well, an island.
If, however, those 3 leave, I think UMass could still stay in the CAA so long as Fordham and one other member north of the Mason-Dixon line is added. Then there's really no loss to UMass, since the New York schools are just as close to us as UNH and URI, and Maine is further away from us than Delaware and not much closer than Towson.

The MAC has never shown that they would do that, not to UCF and not to Temple. They like the number twelve for olympic sports. If you guys have a strong football program then the MAC isn't going to risk losing it by forcing the hand down.
When did that rule come into play? All I can say is that a bunch of schools should be ready by then and UMass should be one of them.

He's talking about the 4 year moratorium the NCAA has put on programs moving up from FCS to FBS (and between divisions) that ends in September of 2012. This became a minor issue among 49er fans September before last as we thought it was a moratorium on start-up programs, our AD's legal council made sure that it is not. But it does prevent programs that had not initiated the move up process before this date from starting the process during the 4 year period. UMass (or any school) can not submit the FBS process papers before 09-2012. As UMass is already an FCS member they would only THEN be able to schedule more FBS teams for their mandatory 2 years of transition play.
I don't think UMass officials are worried about the MAC asking them to move all sports to the MAC. I think they don't find playing in the MAC appealing on ANY level, even football-only. They will either have to pray the Big East asks them to come over, start working with other major-FCS and FBS schools to form a new football conference at FBS level, or accept playing in the MAC.

Well the MAC had four bowl bids this year. CMU, OU, TU, and NIU. That's pretty appealing for a mid-major league.
There's no way UMass gets an invite straight to the Big East. Maybe, just maybe, if Syracuse bolts and it triggers a split.
