5. North Texas (3-5)
Losses: at Creighton 71-51, Alabama-Huntsville 78-75, at Virginia 80-64, Texas-Arlington 72-59, Louisiana-Lafayette 80-76

Why they've disappointed: Before the season began, Tony Mitchell told me he wanted to leave a legacy at North Texas. Right now, however, the only thing this year's Mean Green will be remembered for is underachieving. Despite having a potential lottery pick in Mitchell and a talented supporting cast, North Texas is off to a disastrous 3-5 start.

Some of those losses have been one-sided yet forgivable like a season-opening 71-51 loss at Creighton. Others have been downright head-scratching like a loss to Division II Alabama-Huntsville or home setbacks against Texas-Arlington and Louisiana-Lafayette. In the Louisiana-Lafayette game, Mitchell scored only three points, took only one shot and fouled out in 25 minutes.

Can they recover? Any hope of North Texas living up to its hype as a dangerous mid-major and the preseason Sun Belt favorite probably depends on whether its anemic offense improves. The Mean Green are shooting 40.2 percent from the floor and an anemic 26 percent from behind the arc.

Compounding the problem, they're also turning the ball over too much. Mitchell's 13.6 points and 8.3 rebounds per game are pedestrian for a super-athletic forward with first-round potential. He needs to take at least 15 shots per game, something he has only done three times this season. And with 12 turnovers and no assists in North Texas' last three games, he needs to do a better job dealing with double teams and his teammates must more consistently sink open shots.

Yep, GMG is on full meltdown mode the last 2 weeks.

No **** Sherlock!

We are about as perplexed about this as anything the last 3 or 4 decades. Something is not right on this team because when you have 3 Top 100 national players on it (mixed with others with pedigree) there is more to this than meets the eye. Time will tell us what that is, of course, and there is still time for this talent to mesh truth be told.

As of today, Tony Mitchell will have another year in Denton--not the NBA.

This is Benford's first head job, right? That could be part of it.

I wouldn't put too much stock into Tony Mitchell stinking it up against Louisiana, he has played poorly the two previous times they met. I would be more concerned that freshman Shawn Long put up 27 points against him.

How is ULL doing so far this year?

Not as good as you guys, congrats 7-1 I think correct? We are 3-5 and on the road tonight against the Brokebacks.

We are very young, so we are terribly inconsistent. We should have beaten Michigan State lost by three I believe but missed FT at the end.

If we can find two more shooters and another solid big man we will be hard to beat in conference. Shawn Long is a monster facing the basket, he poured in 27 against Tony Mitchell and UNT. But he plays to the level of his competition. He is the most talented player we have had since Elvin Ivory according to some.

We will be much better in two years.

I saw that you'll lost a close one to MSU and figured you probably had some good players. We haven't really played any good teams yet and have to play at NWST in their barn tonight... I really like our young coach and all our good players are either FR or SO so the future looks pretty good. Good luck with your season. 04-cheers

yet benford preached about how he was going to concentrate on the defense and rebounding...i think he forgot to work on those two objectives...

ODU knows that feeling. Luckily we weren't picked to finish as a favorite. It's a race to the bottom for us. :(
