He was done at USM anyway and would never have changed positions so its not that bad of news.

While only being here for a year, he was an epic failure on and off the field and won't be missed.

If AA thinks he'll play QB there, he's completely delusional. He was completely delusional if he thought Todd Monken would play him at QB as well.

Talked to Anthony recently. And guys, Anthony is really a respectful young man with a lot of character, and a tremendous athlete. I have known Anthony since he was 12 years old, and watched him play baseball since then. He was the size he is now when he turned 13 and was turning heads with his play then. In my opinion, Anthony was never good enough at the QB position to be a successful D-1 QB. However, I respect him for following what he loved and wanted to do, and not just following the money. However, his future is on the baseball diamond. Baseball is effortless for him, he is a natural and if you ever saw him play, it was obvious how good he was, and how easy he made it look. That's not the case with Anthony and playing QB.

Anthony is considering transferring to Ole Miss. But honestly, I believe Anthony is going to start working towards his future and move on to play with the Blue Jays.

Whatever he decides to do, I wish nothing but success for the young man.

You better git that chiles name out yo' mouf.

In all seriousness, I hope he just goes to Toronto and accepts his assignment. He probably should have done that on day one.

Any word on how his mom is taking all this?

That depends. Because of his off field trouble, he may not be playing baseball any more. If he goes to Ole Miss and is 100% dedicated to football, with a good coach, he may turn out to be one hell of a player. He was extremely athletic. He (and his mom) just need to learn that the world does not revolve around him. I'm not saying I wish he would have stayed. But a lot of his problems (other than off field troubles) were just as much coaching as anything else. In the right system, with the right coach, he could be special. At Southern Miss he was a cancer only because of the situation of playing for his high school coach and the fact that he also played baseball.

The young man needs to just pick up his baseball glove and head north. He has athletic ability but he is no passer and he isn't willing to focus on improving his football skills to play baseball. I thought Campbell and Favor were better and AA would have been backing them up anyway. I wish him luck and admit I fear he lacks maturity, as does his mom, to avoid the pitfalls professional athletics can open.

Baseball Anthony. That is the answer.

RE: Anthony Alford granted release from Southern Miss - eagleriffic - 12-13-2012 12:37 PM

I wish him well & success if he plays baseball. I think he needs to follow that path & stay away from the football fiend unless he is open to moving to a different position.

RE: Anthony Alford granted release from Southern Miss - EagleX - 12-13-2012 12:37 PM

I don't understand why we want to blame AA. this was another spectacularly bungled situation by EJ and his high school OC.

we threw AA into a horrible situation before he was ready, and our very best idea was to run the &%$#@ QB draw 20 times a game*.

that young man was one of the best high school players in the state, and only the incompetence of Coach Daddy Ball could turn a huge strength into an institutional embarrassment.

*and having to start AA was partially a product of the fact that they tried to run the QB draw (or something vaguely similar) with campbell and lloyd (who are certainly not known for their running prowess), too; the staff's lack of imagination was actually a cause of those young men getting injured.

How is losing an elite athlete like Alford "good news"?

I agree. It isn't good news. It is actually "great" news.

0-12, off the field issues, wouldn't play baseball for us.

BYE

Being an all around USM sports fan I was jacked when he committed to play here. My opinion changed once he signed to play baseball with the Blue Jays. I was more excited what he was bringing to the baseball team than I was football wise. To me, when he signed with Toronto it was depressing knowing what he could have done for Coach Berry. I never thought he would be able to excel at both pro baseball and college football at the same time because he would miss summer workouts and get out of football shape IMO. Good riddance as this will be one less distraction going into spring ball. SMTTT!

RE: Anthony Alford granted release from Southern Miss - DaSaintFan - 12-13-2012 10:59 PM

X, my problem with Alford was that he only came here because we were offering him the QB position. Everyone else that was recruiting him, wanted him as a "wildcat" QB, WR, and you could tell he "knew" that.

He'll probably transfer up to Ole piss and claim "he wanted to be a WR all along".

BUT IMO, he should have stuck to baseball.. he would have been "gold" (No pun intended), and still could be on the diamond.
