What is the main problem the ACC must fix? - Villecard - 03-14-2013 10:42 PM

Is it solely the TV contract? Looking at it, the league has been on an uptick with their additions of Louisville, Syracuse, Pitt, and ND. However, the ACC is still perceived to be the most likely to be poached. Does it simply come down to money, or is there something more?

RE: What is the main problem the ACC must fix? - AntiG - 03-14-2013 10:48 PM

Because the B1G and SEC specifically wants its teams (UNC, UVA, VT, FSU, Clemson, NC State, Duke), and the Big 12 is more difficult to poach due to the GOR. The leftovers of the former Big East, Mountain West, Conf USA, MAC and SBC the power conferences don't want. That leaves the ACC.

ahhhhhhhh why did you pose this question here... lol

RE: What is the main problem the ACC must fix? - allthatyoucantleavebehind - 03-15-2013 01:09 AM

The ACC only has two problems.

1. They don't have rabid football fan bases (large stadiums, passionate followings, etc.)

2. The football teams they have aren't peaking in the past five-eight years.

These two factors are killing them when it comes to TV money. If Miami and FSU were playing like they did in the 90s, the ACC might be able to survive factor #1. But without that, they are doubly screwed.

They are wedged between two football power conferences (yes, I know the Big Ten has sucked...but their fans still love them like they don't suck! 04-cheers) who have incredible TV leverage right now.

Two main problems - t.v. contract is just short of keeping existing members from flirting. Geography is the other problem. B1G wants to move east and south and poaching the SEC isn't an option.

The ACC just has too many schools and fanbases that don't care enough about football: BC, Georgia Tech, Wake, Duke, Virginia, Pitt, Syracuse. Miami, NC State and UNC are borderline.

Basically VT, Clemson, Louisville, and FSU will be carrying 10 perennially mediocre to abysmal teams. The SEC is the opposite of this.

If you ever want to compare a schools commitment to winning, just look at coaching salaries.

I don't think that ND would have jumped to the ACC if the Irish had any real concerns about the future of the conference.

It could have stayed where it was for one year and talked to the C7 about a long term relationship.

I think that there were assurances given to and from the Irish. ESPN, ND and Texas (with a Big 12/ACC scheduling alliance) may be working together here.

Well it would not make sense for an ACC school not already a Football power to jump into the SEC or B1G for Football and remain in the lower tier of those conferences when they can just upgrade the Teams in the ACC and win. the Big 12 is not an option period!

The instant the ACC signs a GOR, the conference is safe from being raided and everyone who predicted doom & gloom for the ACC is immediately proven wrong.

No reason to sign a GoR unless you have an ACC Network up and running....the current buyout willl protect the league somewhat if it hold up in the ACC/Maryland issue.

This is America, GoR or not there if someone really wants to leave they will leave...even a $50 Million payout is stopping the Terripans...

None of those things would be able to stop a B1G/SEC raid. ND has no worries either way because they will always have the Big East as a back up

Louisville only packs their stadium if they are winning. A very fair weather fan base

The only problem the ACC has is others' perception of it.

RE: What is the main problem the ACC must fix? - BigOwensboroCard - 03-15-2013 07:15 AM

I too wouild like to see this GOR talk come to a halt till the digital network is up and running amongst the ACC. I think if they can get ESPN to re-work their 3rd tier TV package deal to help accommodate this then there is a possibility of extra income across the board.

I also would like to see the ACC approach the Irish with a deal to think about and see if they would be interested as a full member down the road. I think if the ACC presented a deal where the Irish could keep their NBC deal to their selves for all home games, and the conference gets their rights for away games with a partial payout say half of what ever the deal is. This should be a very attractive offer IMO to make the Irish squirm enough while thinking about all the pro's & con's of joining, and if they decide to join end of discussion with all this realignment talk what so ever.

No, we are not really worried anymore....if the ACC falls apart we will be with the group going to the Big XII.

Sorry USM fans...when you have the 2nd largest Athletic Budget in the upcoming ACC & the highest profit margin....along with Final Four Appearences in Men & Women Basketball....College World Series...Soccor Final Four and a pair of BCS Bowl wins this century....no reason to worry @ all....no other college program can say this. In the BCS era. 07-coffee3

Yes, Money. There is nothing wrong with the ACC that equivalent money to the other major conferences wouldn't fix.
