Jacksonville St, Delaware, Townson, UTC, Lamar, Indiana St, Illinois St, Missouri St and SHSU and Richmond have all been in contact with SBC

Indiana State? Tennessee-Chattanooga?? Richmond??? 01-wingedeagle

Gotta keep your options open and evaluate them all, do you think they would really go with Indiana St or Illinois St? UTC and Missouri State are probably more likely and aren't to bad of options.

I find it hard to believe Richmond would seriously pursue moving up, especially if it meant associating with (in their mind) inferior schools. Their endowment alone is larger of the rest of the SBC schools combined. They'd be the only private in the entire league. They'd also have to completely rebuild their fairly new stadium and significantly downgrade their basketball (if they couldn't get a FB only option).

Tennessee-Chattanooga would make a lot sense from a location perspective.

We aren't desperate. We may be holding the very last FCS to FBS invite.

RE: Sun Belt getting really desperate? - bostonspider - 04-11-2013 10:00 AM

Maybe the Sun Belt contacted UR, but in no way can I see Richmond contacting the Sun Belt. The Spiders just recently built a 9,000 seat on campus stadium. That pretty much says where their priorities lie, and it is not with FBS football.

Clarity people.

First the tweet does not let us know which of those schools the Sun Belt contacted and which initiated contact.

If some or all inititated contact that is like running a headline saying Carmen Electra is getting desperate because some out-of-shape, out-of-work 50 year-old who lives with his parents hit on her.

Second.
The procedure when NMSU, Idaho, USU left for the WAC and the NCAA adopted the 8 full member rule, there were schools who contacted the Sun Belt to express interest in membership who were never given serious consideration. There were schools that were believed to hold some potential value who were contacted to see what their plan was in football, if the answer was FCS, the conversation was over, if the answer was FBS then more information was exchanged but not everyone who said I'm interested in FBS survived the vetting process to be considered.

Benson is kind of tone-deaf to how these things are going to play in public. He did the same thing with the WAC, publicly trying to chase down any school that he thought of as a possibility for the WAC. There was one school (IIRC, North Texas) that seemed to really enjoy publicly snubbing Benson every time he mentioned them as a possible WAC member.

Exactly.
I don't suppose the B1G or ACC were desperate when 20 schools were contacting them to join their leagues.

He should try bribery. I think our AD would listen to a "reverse entrance fee" pitch. It's not like we're looking forward to being in Impostor CUSA.

No JMU...wow.

I don't see Delaware or Richmond heading toward the SBC...they will probably stick it out with Villanova and keep the CAA viable as an FCS league...if JMU stays, that's easily the best league in the country.

Jacksonville State seems like the most realistic option...but I'm sure the SBC wants better....Missouri State is an interesting one, although if Ark St is leaving, it probably doesn't make much geographical sense.

Maybe the SBC should be looking toward the West like Idaho's president indicated.

RE: Sun Belt getting really desperate? - BeliefBlazer - 04-11-2013 11:15 AM

We all know JMU and Liberty have been in contact. I think this is the Sun Belt taking precautions just in case C-USA goes to 16, or something massively stupid is done by the big conferences.

How about you guys come over and we will let Idaho down gently? 02-13-banana

USM, stAte, ULL and Troy is better than what would be left in CUSA.

Even if ASU leaves Missouri State is still a bus trip in all other sports to Little Rock and with an airport at Springfield and another in Branson (served by SW) it's easy to get to at a reasonable price, its the rare competetive small market in airfare.

I am surprised that Coastal Carolina is not gettign more discussion...they have a Billionaire coach for FB, South Carolina only has 2 FBS programs, Cliff Ellis is their basketball coach and have been routinely in the Top 25 in baseball. They are also in a market with 0 competition locally. Their facilities continue to improve...

Coastal would probably need to go to 20000 seats in time for the 2014 season to get approved by the SBC.

that's a lot of the issue. there's not as many "ready now" programs available. SBC would have you believe there's 10-20 programs ready now but that's simply not the case.

There were two and they just got them.

Maybe Montana/Montana St. are ready, but not for joining the Sun Belt.

None of these other schools are really ready. Georgia State wasn't really ready.

BTW, gorgeous stadium. Great setting.

RE: Sun Belt getting really desperate? - MUHERD76 - 04-11-2013 12:47 PM

No mention of JMU...Hmmm.

And now they are saying that Delaware has been in contact? Wasn't the AD or President at Delaware recently stating that a move the Sunbelt would be a "step back" and was criticizing JMU for considering the move?
