New Big East Expansion - UNLVFan90 - 07-01-2013 06:48 PM
If the new Big East expands next year, I think they should go up to 16 and it should look like this:
Butler
Creighton
Dayton
DePaul
Georgetown
La Salle
Marquette
Providence
Seton Hall
St. John's
St. Joseph's
St. Louis
Villanova
Virginia Commonwealth
Wichita State
Xavier
I added Dayton, La Salle, St. Joseph's, St. Louis, Virginia Commonwealth, and Wichita State. All team went over .500 last year while La Salle, St. Louis, VCU, and Wichita State went to the tourney. St. Louis and VCU advanced to the round of 32, La Salle advanced to the sweet sixteen, and Wichita State advanced to the final four.
I think the new Big East would be better if it had 16 good teams instead of 10 or 12. What do you think?

Got enough schools in Philly? No way Villanova let's even one school from Philly in the Big East.

Agreed on Nova and the other Philly schools. Plus I really don't think VCU is an option. There is too high a probability that VCU might one day start football and want to move it up to FBS. I think the BE holds at twelve and waits to see what other basketball schools make a push to join.

There is really no reason to go past ten teams, ten allows for a full round robin. Not to mention there isn't a team they could add (besides UConn, but that's a different story) that is going to change the per team payout or is a big upgrade from the teams they already have.

If VCU is serious about having an FBS team and can draw fans like Old Dominion, then they need to call the MAC. UMass / VCU / Delaware / James Madison. Done.

There was word that if we went to 12 Fox would adjust the contract accordingly. I don't know if there is a time limit on that deal or what. I'm sure they would love for us to add more content and new markets for them.

St Louis is pretty solid addition.
Thats why most who have been following this would tell you they are next in line if they ever expand past 10.

I think it will be St. Louis as #11 and Dayton as #12. Richmond could contend based on its desirable TV market and recent NCAA tournament success (Sweet 16 in 2011), but I give Dayton the edge due to its larger arena, higher attendance and Catholic affiliation. I don't think VCU fits the conference profile.

That will be the big debate which is held often on the Big East Board. VCU & Wichita State have pulled higher TV ratings and have superior overall athletic programs to the privates. Wichita State would be a top 5 athletic program coming into the conference. Both also make good travel partners with Creighton and Georgetown respectively. But they don't fit the profile.
St Louis and Richmond fit the profile but the Big East then looks very similiar to the WCC both in terms of overall Athletic strength and membership composition. They risk ultimately being paid WCC dollars.
So what shall it be? Many expect us to go to 12 but the question is with whom?

Yep, TV will decide how and when they expand. They have to hit those contract look-in timelines. St. Louis would seem to be a shoe-in for #11. I hope the Big East does not take a public school. The idea of conferences being composed of like minded and peer institutions is intriguing.

If VCU is serious about having an FBS team and can draw fans like Old Dominion, then they need to call the MAC. UMass / VCU / Delaware / James Madison. Done.
VCU though is not serious about having an FBS football team. They've put all of their chips into basketball with the A10 and that is where Richmond, GMU and George Washington all play.
The MAC could try and offer JMU, ODU and Delaware as a combo package. Would ODU leave CUSA? The MAC is restructuring its TV deal and has better academics than CUSA. They would get more exposure on ESPN.

I hope that you are correct on that prediction. The two flaws I see with this are that Butler is not Catholic affiliated and that I have heard that the 5 old timer Big East schools, St. Johns and Gtown..., want to have an eastern school and Richmond fits in the best. I am confident that Dayton is in the running but I am not sure they will get in.

Dayton and St. Louis give the BE twelve members but 7 of those in the West with 5 in the East.
The question is who would the BE even want in the East though?
Duquesne (little success)
Fordham (St. John's market)
George Washington (GTown's market)
La Salle (Villanova's market)
Richmond (????)
St. Joseph's (Villanova's market)
Davidson (small market)
It sounds like if the BE wants to go to 12 for travel purposes the way to do it would be St. Louis and Fordham. Fordham is in St. John's market but would be nice for travel.
The A10 can then take in Sienna as Fordham's replacement and Detroit as a replacement for St. Louis.

Fordham doesn't move the needle in NY. In terms of New Yoirk fan interest Fordham is behind SJU, Syracuse, Rutgers, Seton Hall, Duke, UNC, Louisville and Kentucky.

St Louis should get the call first and foremost; I would then look at VCU and Richmond. Find out which one has the bigger commitment to basketball, and go with that team. If necessary, take both. Detroit and Holy Cross should also get looks, IMO.
