Ohio State defensive end dismissed from team

Bill Bender @BillBender92

According to multiple reports, Ohio State coach Urban Meyer dismissed defensive end Tracy Sprinkle from the football team.

Cleveland.com reports a team spokesman said that Sprinkle's status could be looked at again depending on the outcome of his legal issues. Sprinkle entered not guilty pleas to charges of rioting, failure to disperse, possession of cocaine and drug paraphernalia Monday.

Sprinkle was arrested after an incident at the Grown & Sexy Lounge in Lorain, Ohio, on Friday night/early Saturday morning.

For those who like to criticize Meyer's track record with player behavior, this seems like a fair and adequate response.

We'll see how long he stays suspended. The word up here is he hasn't been dismissed.

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Urban Meyer dismissed Tracy Sprinkle from the Ohio State football team on Monday after the defensive lineman was arrested over the weekend and charged with cocaine possession after a bar brawl in Lorain.

Sprinkle, 19, entered not guilty pleas to charges of rioting, failure to disperse, possession of cocaine and drug paraphernalia in a Monday morning arraignment in a Lorain courtroom.

Meyer had previously suspended Sprinkle from football activities indefinitely pending the outcome of his case. Now he is completely off the team, though a team spokesman said that Sprinkle's status could be looked at again depending on the outcome of his legal issues.

Meyer followed a similar path in 2012 with linebacker Storm Klein. He was dismissed from the team that summer after facing a charge of domestic violence and assault. Klein later pleaded to a lesser charge of disorderly conduct and rejoined the team and did play that season.

Sprinkle, the 2012 Plain Dealer Defensive Player of the Year while at Elyria High School, redshirted during his first season in Columbus in 2013 but was expected to contribute as a backup defensive lineman this season.

One point of emphasis from Meyer since his arrival in Columbus has been for players to walk away from situations. According to the police report of what was referred to as "absolute mayhem" at the Grown & Sexy Lounge in Lorain on Friday night/early Saturday morning, Sprinkle allegedly didn't do that.

According to the report, Sprinkle and another man, Wayne Blue, were seen yelling at each other.

"Both males were ordered to disperse at which time they would walk away," the reports reads. "However, several minutes later I observed them again becoming confrontational with each other on the west side of the building.

"I then shined my flashlight directly at Tracy and ordered him to leave. The group that had been trying to hold Tracy back responded by saying, 'We got him,' as they pushed him towards a car."

The officer then went to deal with other issues, but later saw another argument and "Tracy was in the middle of the argument. This is the same male I had just ordered to leave while standing in the west parking lot."

It was at this point, according to report, that Sprinkle was arrested.

Ohio State DL faces cocaine, rioting charges after brawl
WKYC-TV 3:42 p.m. EDT July 7, 2014

LORAIN, Ohio — The official report from Lorain Police on the arrest of Ohio State defensive lineman Tracy Sprinkle on Friday night includes a charge of cocaine possession and describes a wild bar brawl at the Grown & Sexy Lounge in Lorain.

According to the report obtained by cleveland.com on Sunday, an officer responded to a "large fight in progress" at the lounge. The officer described about 50 people outside the lounge upon arrival, with several groups of them fighting.

Sprinkle was allegedly one of those involved and was arrested at the scene and placed in the back of a police car.

According to the report of a second officer, who placed Sprinkle under arrest, two small bags of cocaine were found stuffed under the back seat after Sprinkle was removed from that vehicle and placed in another car. According to the report, they weighed 0.2 grams each and both tested positive on the scene as cocaine.

Ohio State football coach Urban Meyer indefinitely suspended Sprinkle on Sunday morning.

The initial responding officer described a scene of "absolute mayhem" inside the bar upon arrival, including chairs being thrown, and deployed a police dog to attempt to get control of the situation. Sprinkle, 19, and another 23-year-old man, Wayne Blue, are described in the report as shouting at each other outside the bar repeatedly as the officer attempted to restore order. All night shift units of the Lorain Police responded to the scene, and the Ohio State Highway Patrol also arrived to assist, according to the report.

A young woman is described in the report as being unconscious when the first officer arrived, and that victim reported that she was a bystander who was hit by a chair and pushed into a wall when the fight broke out. She was unsure as to who threw the chair or pushed her. She was treated by an ambulance crew that responded to the scene.

According the report, Blue said he was struck in the face with a bottle by Sprinkle. The officer said that Sprinkle "denied any involvement with anything and otherwise remained quiet."

In addition to Sprinkle's drug charge, both Blue and Sprinkle were charged with rioting and failure to disperse. A check of the bar after the fight by police found "the pool table had been flipped over, overhead lights were broken, tables and chairs had been thrown around and broken apart along with multiple beer and liquor bottles."

One article says "dismissed" the other says "indefinitely suspended."

Whatever the real issue is, Sprinkle will always have a place waiting for him at Louisville...

Maybe that Cincinnati offer would have been a better choice.
