Spiral goes deeper, LU 48 - Campbell 53 - NewTimes - 12-31-2014 07:03 PM

Made commitments to the wife today and missed the Liberty MBB game against Campbell today. Just saw the score. What a woeful game for both teams. LU shoots 30% on field goal made and Campbell at 28%. That must have been some low brow play. I'm beginning to think some of the high school teams playing in the Arby's Classic tournament in Johnson City, TN could play with, and likely beat these two D1 schools. AD Barber, make the change now, please. 48 points Jeff, 48 poinuts on 30% shooting.

Chris Lang's tweets weren't very encouraging before the game. He said that Liberty wasn't a bad team but turned it over too much and if they cut down the turnovers then they'd be competitive and winning more. Is that a coaching problem or are the players not listening? Either way it's just terrible and unacceptable.

Liberty was the defending Big South champs who returned almost all of their players last year and finished 11-21 overall, 5-11 in the regular season of the Big South and losing in the first round of the conference tournament. We lost many of the team to graduation and had to "rebuild" this season but we won't even get better than the 11-21 record of last year. It is sad to see how far we've fallen from our NCAA tourney appearance.

I'll admit, I've grown to the point of apathy regarding the men's basketball team. The play is so bad that I am not even interested in following the team anymore. That is a dangerous place for the LU fan base to be and hurts our desire for big time athletics. I really don't believe Barber is going to fire Layer. I don't think Layer is going to do the right thing and resign. I think we'll be stuck with the downward spiral of LU basketball until his contract runs out. Then we will start from scratch and it will be a long road back to success.

The only good thing about our current position is that we cannot sink any lower. Do the right thing AD Barber. Let coach Layer go and wish him well. The time is now, not after the season.

I don't see why it can't wait until after the season. Do we have an assistant capable of coaching the rest of the year?

Does anyone know how many years are left on Layer's contract? I would be very surprised of Layer turns it around and/or stays on as the coach. But even so, if he only has one year remaining then it's almost guaranteed he will not be back in my opinion. You can't have a lame duck coach in college. Either extend him or fire him if he has one year left because recruits and assistant coaches won't come here if the coach may not last the season.

The record Layer has achieved, with the exception of one year is enough. This hard decision must be made on record and merit rather than personality and likeability. This must be the hardest decisions for ADs and school admins. I see your points on retaining Layer till the end. The easier decision is yours. The harder one mine. Which will benefit the school and program the most. As Army Mike started, can we let the dwindling fan base become apathetic like AM and myself? If a sniff of this has any implication for FBS consideration then the decision had already been made.

I don't think it serves a good purpose to fire Coach Layer mid-season. I don't think it would be a wise move by the University.
