New Mexico and UTEP will be kicking and screaming if New Mexico State joins. They would rather have North Dakota State and bannished New Mexico State to the FCS.

1. I think Notre Dame fits in well with the ACC.
2. It fits my paradigm of "Eight 16 team conferences"
3. Alabama is in a conference. Texas is in a conference. Ohio State is in a conference.
4. Olympics are already in the ACC
5. Relations seem strained with the Big Ten
6. Don't really know....don't really care.

RE: Eight 16 Team Conferences - toddjnsn - 07-21-2015 02:57 PM

When it comes to the G5s, they do Care about geographic location, unless said rare place brings in a boatload of money like BYU (TV, attendance). Merging Sun Belt & MAC left-overs wouldn't be so viable.

If location never mattered, I would say merge the best of G5 teams, make it one conference, and make it P5. Simple as that. But that's a big reason why it can't be that simple. Location, location, location.

Since we're playing fantasy-land where travel costs don't matter, a new G5->P5 Conference full of 14 teams:

- Boise State
- BYU
- Memphis
- East Carolina
- UCF
- Northern Illinois
- Marshall
- Cincinnati
- Toledo
- Colorado State
- Houston
- Navy
- Temple
- Air Force

RE: Eight 16 Team Conferences - primus74 - 07-21-2015 03:19 PM

8x16 might be too many teams. I like an 8 conferences x 10 members. Something like:
East: Cuse/BC/Penn St/Notre Dame/Pitt/Rutgers/UConn/West Virginia/Virginia Tech/Louisville
ACC: Maryland/Duke/UNC/NC State/UVA/Clemson/Miami/Wake Forest/GA Tech/Florida St
SEC: Florida/Tenn/Bama/Auburn/Miss/Miss St/Kentucky/Georgia/LSU/Vandy
BIG: Michigan/Mich St/Indiana/Purdue/Ohio St/Minn/Wisconsin/Iowa/Illinois/Northwestern
Big 12: Texas/Texas A&M/Nebraska/Oklahoma/Okl St/Texas Tech/Baylor/Arkansas/Kansas/Kan St
PAC 10: Cal/Stanford/UCLA/USC/Arizona/Az St/Oregon/Oregon St/Washington/Wash St
Mideast: Cincy/South Carolina/Missouri/Memphis/ECU/USF/UCF/NIU/Army/Navy
Midwest: Boise St/Utah/Colorado/SDSU/Colorado St/TCU/Iowa St/UNLV/New Mexico/Air Force

Or something like this. Each conference plays a round robin. No conference championship. Winners plus 8 at-large go to 16-team playoff. Keeps lots of natural and historical rivalries.

Eight 16 Team Conferences - chargeradio - 07-21-2015 05:14 PM

Since no one will voluntarily take a demotion, we must wait for UAB to come back and get to 129 teams:

B1G invites Oklahoma and Kansas
SEC invites TCU and WVU
ACC invites Baylor and Texas
PAC invites Texas Tech, Oklahoma State, Iowa State, Kansas State
Notre Dame retains partial FBS independence

MWC invites BYU, UTEP, NMSU, Idaho
American invites UMass, ODU, NIU, Buffalo
C-USA invites Ohio, Toledo, Ball State, CMU
SBC and MAC merge, pick up Army

Well from a basketball stance they get UConn men and women.....both perennial powers and title contenders.....and the ACC is basketball oriented.

All conferences have access to the playoffs.

If the G5 conference champs are ever involved in the CFP, they will play each other in an initial play-in round - to knock each other out. Think NCAA bball tournament.

So, if this ever happened, you would likely see a 10-12 team CFP with a first round involving the four G5 champs - that leaves the two remaining G5 champs to play on the road at #1 and #2.

It would still be awesome!

Navy and Air Force will not join this conference. I would drop Temple. If you add North Dakota State, Eastern Washington and Georgia Southern in place of Temple, Air Force and Navy could make the conference look much more stronger.

No problem. I was just operating under the theory that there has to be some benefit to the incoming school to justify joining a football conference. My bad.

RE: Eight 16 Team Conferences - DavidSt - 07-22-2015 01:17 PM

I think people keep forgetting that both BYU and Boise State made more profits in football than several of the P5 schools.

RE: Eight 16 Team Conferences - perimeterpost - 07-22-2015 04:16 PM

The answer is smaller conferences, not larger. The ideal conference size is 10- in football you move to a 9 game conference schedule so everybody plays everybody every year. In basketball an 18 game conference schedule give every team a home/away series vs every other conference member.
