"Targeting" Rule May Get More Ridiculous - DogsWin1 - 02-15-2016 12:28 AM

One of the more notable possible changes could come to the controversial targeting rule, which has been a maddening rule since the day it was introduced. It is not so much the intent of the rule that bothers fans, but the lack of consistency in which it is called and enforced.

In an effort to enhance the safety intended to be provided by the rule, the rules committee will review a proposal that would allow an instant replay official in the booth to call targeting penalties missed by the on-field officials. This does little for the consistency of the targeting call enforcement, but does lead to the possibility of longer college football games, which have already been growing in length as it is.

If the rule is passed, it could go into effect this fall.

this season it frequently looked like there was a rule against hard hits of any kind.

Two hand touch is next...

If players would actually try to tackle instead of trying to knock down a person, a lot of that would be cleared up.

As CTE becomes a bigger problem, I think "hitting" will become a penalty and you are only allowed to wrap up and tackle.

If CTE becomes a crisis, you could even see weight limits come into play. Players have become much heavier the last 30 years increasing the impact force on my the brain.

Nah..definently two hand touch, so they can still look at replay to see if the "tackler" actually touched the ball carrier with two hands. More TV ad time....

Anyone truly targeting with their helmet needs to be penalized and tossed from the game. Now what "truly targeting" is seems to be the question.

I say let them play like they did in old days and they won't lead with their helmet

The majority of the flags are based on how the hit looks and the reaction of the player getting hit. Can't tell you how many times I saw a referee throw a flag only AFTER the player didn't immediately get up.

Also, instant replay has really amplified things....Now you will have a situation that takes less than 2 seconds in real-time and they will show it in super duper snail speed slow motion 8 times immediately after the play and you have 3-4 different people on the TV trying to tell you "The defender was doing this because he was thinking this," "The receiver/runner went this way for this long then established direction and three of his toes moved four inches so he was defenseless"...like, no....That's not what happened. Football is what happened. Human instincts is what happened.

This part isn't related to college football, b/c I'm not sure of the numbers, but I know in the NFL, the number of concussions have progressively went up each year over the last 3-5 years, while more emphasis is supposedly being put on safety. Sure the numbers could be up because of the increase in concussions being reported, i.e., if you sneeze the wrong way on the field and keep your head down too long, the team doctor is probably taking your helmet, but that should just show how ridiculously hard it is to make this game any safer than it already is...on the field. I equate trying to take head/brain trauma out of football to taking back pain away from NASCAR drivers. It's an inherit risk that comes with the occupation.

I don't understand the penalty-aspect of the game, unless the play is an obvious targeting type play, where you DON'T have to show the impact in slow motion to figure out what happened.

Use it as a teaching method.

Sometimes my fingers just don't stop.

I'm done.

I agree with Jack Bauer. Put 'em back into leather helmets. I guarantee you this will stop the targeting. The problem now is that the players have a "false sense of security" with the current hard shell helmets. Take it away and they'll stop using it as a weapon.

The problem I have is the helmet to helmet penalty part of the penalty. It's always the defensive player that gets the flag. There have been plenty of times when it looks like the defensive guy was trying to go low and make a good tackle, but the ball carrier dips his head at the last second. The defensive guy gets a flag for helmet to helmet. The call needs to be made both ways.

Flag football? So great, this will lead football games to be 4 hours now after they review every other play...

I don't agree with this in this sense.

Big hits didn't start happening within in the last five seasons...It's not a new phenomenon.

It's been going on since the 60's.....Which is the big issue; it's a culture.

Yes...the 1960's which was the first full decade with face masks on helmets and the 2nd decade with hard shell helmets. Coincidentally, this is when the big hits started getting worse.

Of course, I'm suggesting leather helmets partially "tongue in cheek". But the fact remains, the current construct of the modern day football helmet really does give players a false sense of security. If a player knew he was going to bust his head open every time he tried to tackle by leading with his head, he wouldn't do it anymore. And if he did, his career would end very quickly. So, he would learn to tackle properly (a truly lost art) like they did in the old days.

Targeting, huh? What's the alternative, just flailing around aimlessly? I think Brandon Browner pioneered that defensive philosophy.
