"Rice Is The Hardest Job In CUSA" - usmbacker - 04-04-2016 09:29 PM

Can't really agree with a lot in this article. There is a poll question if Rice is the worst job in CUSA. I voted no.

I can't see how anyone could disagree with any of the 'cons' in there.

I stopped reading when he said yellow rice was the best rice. What an idiot.

What job is more difficult? I think Charlotte would have more appeal. Obviously UTSA, UNT, FAU, FIU, ODU does, so what is worse?

RE: "Rice Is The Hardest Job In CUSA" - MWC Tex - 04-05-2016 08:08 AM

Yeah, I agree with the article. Just as Air Force is the hardest job in the MW.
Academic requirements really limit who you can recruit and being a G5 school makes it even harder. GA Tech has high requirements which is why most schools that have high academic standards usually play option football.
What the Rice coach really needs is support from the school for football. In addition, Rice football needs to broaden out nationwide for recruiting get a few of those other players that can make the academic standard and overlooked, but that comes back around to having the school support football more with a bigger recruiting budget.

The only con , if valid, is that its hard to get players admitted. Dont know how true that is relatively. Is it Stanford hard? Vandy hard? or GT hard?

Harder. Rice's academic standards for athletes are higher than all those. From what I hear, there's also a complicated application process in place that turns a lot of the athletes off.

Then drop down. I mean, its big boy football. If you cannot work it out with admissions to get kids in then you're wasting your time.

If the administration cannot commit to getting kids enrolled then they will never be able to compete. Kids get into schools as exceptions all the time outside of athletics. Most football programs are allowed a certain number of exceptions by admissions department. If Rice Football isnt then its going to be near impossible to recruit Houston and get the kids they need in. GT by the way has this problem as well which is why the they run the Triple Option. Non too coincidentally Tulane hired a TO coach as well.

Rice already "competes," and it does it with more integrity than any other FBS program in the nation.

Nice reply. Spot on. 04-cheers

Why is it so hard to coach the student-athletes who want to earn a Rice degree while playing football? We have a proud history of graduating remarkable young men and women who wear the Old English R.

RE: "Rice Is The Hardest Job In CUSA" - THUNDERStruck73 - 04-05-2016 11:56 AM

Rice simply does not recruit student-athletes whom, by their established metrics, possess neither the potential nor aptitude to graduate THEIR curriculum. Nothing wrong with that. It does make it more difficult to recruit, but they are doing fine. Rice also does not admit non-qualifiers. I don't know if those are the "exceptions" of which you speak or not.

Wait a minute. Teams run the triple option because there are no qualified kids who can catch or throw a football??? Nebraska ran the triple option... WVU ran the Veer. Ohio ran the triple option. Doesn't GaSo run the option?

Yes. For the high academic schools and military academies (most at the G5 level) The triple option is the leveling factor. There aren't as many available QB's and WR's to compete at the high FBS level who meet stringent academic standards.

Remember this article is about Rice and CUSA. Rice has the highest academic standards in CUSA. Finding athletes that meet those academic standards and talented enough for FBS football makes them the hardest in CUSA to coach football. Sure Rice gets a good season now and then but it is not consistent. Finding 85 and even 100 players for college football like Rice is harder than any other sport Rice sponsors.
