Charlie Strong and Ruffin McNeill - different school, same problem (skin color) - UConnHusky - 11-29-2016 02:09 PM

I think that this article nails it correctly when the author states that Texas boosters were never behind Charlie Strong because he was black. Ruffin McNeill can probably relate as most of us would agree that his firing at ECU was not fully warranted (and he would almost have certainly been given an additional season to prove himself if he were white). The fact that there is truth behind this racial bias at the head coaching level is totally messed up.

I'm not saying it's impossible, but it's highly unlikely that if Ruffin was fired because of his skin color that we would have replaced him with another African American coach.

Hiring another African American head coach could have been a move to save face by ECU since Ruff's firing was viewed by many as having a racial component to it. Either way, I don't believe that the situation at ECU was overtly racist. At Texas, I think that it absolutely was.

You are an idiot! I have it on pretty good authority, they knew Strong was black when they hired him and paid him millions as he went under. 500 and lost to Kansas!!!

Moron....

I can name a bunch of coaches of every persuasion that probably should have been given an additional year.

I don't follow Texas closely enough to know what all is going on, but that's a school with lofty expectations and nobody is going to last there with 5-7 records.

Talk about stereotyping. So if a school in a southern state fires an African American coach is because of race? Dude have you ever been south of Manhattan? And I don't mean Manhattan Kansas.

I wasn't offered a basketball scholarship to Georgetown because I was white.

And because I stink at basketball. And I'm slow. And I quit playing in 10th grade.

But mainly because I'm white.

Wondee if the AP will pick up my story.

Lots of southerners getting defensive about not being racist on here. That is usually a sign of admittance! LOL

Im not even reading it that's how stupid it is. Mack Brown was white and won a national championship---yet Texas fired white Mack Brown after he went 8-5, 9-4, and 8-5. Charlie wasn't even close to that record and his team was trending backward. Skin color had nothing to do with it. Charlie screwed up on day one when he gutted his team of much of its upper class talent. No boosters made him do that. That was Charlies decision---that move and the failure to surround himself with the right coordinators ultimately cost him his job. If Charlie wins 7 games this year and showed progress---he'd still be the coach of the Texas Longhorns. If anything, they stuck with Charlie longer than they normally would have just because they didn't want the first African American HC at Texas to fail.

Dumb stuff like this and the fact that people are tired of it is the reason Donald Trump is going to be president.

No, that is not why Ruffin was fired at ECU.

First you call people racist, and now you call millions of Americans dumb. You continue to prove my point. You falsely accuse people and put them down and they're probably not going to like you, and they definitely won't vote for you.

Ruffin's firing was justified when you look at how stacked a few of his teams were with guys like Shane Carden and Justin Hardy, and he didn't win anything.

RE: Charlie Strong and Ruffin McNeill - different school, same problem (skin color) - HoustonRocks - 11-29-2016 02:46 PM

From 1951 to the present, the fewest games coached other than Charlie Strong (30) was David McWilliams (57). Problem?
