I agree that committee is supposed make its report sometime this Spring. More likely than not it will be in favor given how the membership was stacked.

But with the SACS probation, the misallocated $5M at UTB that had to get repaid, and now the Governor announcing a hiring freeze, I'm pretty sure the bosses in Austin are going to tell us to hold off even making an announcement of intention for at least a few years.

Unless some donor comes up with $10M or so.

My question is: will the Southland immediately invite UTRGV once football begins play? They have the facilities - football and basketball now. Or will they play as an FCS Ind. for awhile or try for the Big South football/A-Sun OLY combo?

I would hope we stay in the wac somehow. I feel the southland is like purgatory. Not even SFA can escape it.

Looks like the target date for football is 2020 and a new stadium. The edinburg mayor was speaking at a real estate forum and was talking about all the things happening. Utrgv football was one of the things he mentioned. Apparently they already have some schematics of a stadium 3 times larger than the new soccer stadium that just got built.

Interesting. Where'd you hear it, or were you at the event yourself?

Any link for that?

Thanks Vaq. People that work for UTRGV have to find out what's happening through the Monitor or other sites, Bailey's not much of a communicator.

It sounds like it's still at the hopes and dreams stage.

You are right about purgatory. There is no place for them to go. The only promotion would be to move up to the Sun Belt or CUSA. Following realignment since Texas State first looked at moving up, the SBC has a "No Southland" agreement. North Texas was desperate for a Texas rival when they were the lone lonestar school in the the league but refused to admit Texas State when when we looked ate moving up.

CUSA is over saturated with Texas schools. My gut reaction is that they would not take them either.

Have you figured out if RGV is adding FCS or FBS football?

Don't know if i'm reading too in between the lines or not but pharr just had their state of the city address and they said they were going to partner up with Utrgv to build a new aquatics center designed for competitions. Utrgv isn't going to build a new aquatics center just because. They are probably adding a womens swim team. They need more womens sports to start football. We'll need to see if softball gets added. That would basically confirm football.
