Quote:The Big Ten is preparing its programs to go to a 20-game conference schedule during the 2018-19 season, multiple sources told FanRag Sports on Tuesday.

Two separate sources told FanRag Sports that the league office has been discussing the move with its respective teams over the past few months and while nothing is finalized, things appear “heading in that direction” for the 18-19 season.

Teams in the Big Ten currently play 18 league games.

The ACC announced last July that it will go to 20 conference games during the 19-20 season and this move by the Big Ten would be a way to keep up in terms of giving its teams the best chance to gain as many quality games as possible.

It would also give its teams fewer opportunities during the non-conference portion of the schedule, as programs in the Big Ten are already committed to participate in both the Gavitt Games and ACC/Big Ten Challenge prior to league play.

Another source told FanRag Sports that the Big Ten would “without question” be playing 20 league games during the 19-20 season, when the ACC makes the transition.

I'm indifferent on this. I like non-conference games because it allows you to play schools you typically wouldn't but I can't dislike more conference games as they should be the schools you most want to play.

I would rather have set rivals to play annual home/home and rotate the rest. I'd be willing to give some schools more rivals than others if it could be worked into the schedule. Penn State probably would want the same schools it plays in the eastern division in football. It works well that Rutgers has the recruiting grounds PSU likes to go for (Philadelphia and New York City) while Maryland, Indiana, Michigan State, Michigan, and Ohio State all have various levels of top basketball pedigree. Unfortunately for Penn State, they've been in constant rebuild mode as they do enough to give you hope but not enough to be a threat in the NCAA.

If this goes through, I could see Rutgers, Penn State and Maryland having home and homes every year. It's a question of how many protected home and homes you have conference wide.

My best guess on what they do is only lock the in-state games. Beyond that, I think locking one for everyone or locking 2 a piece would be on the table. I am personally divided. I like the idea of playing everyone as often as possible, but would like to see Michigan on the schedule every year home and home. That would not happen with only one locked, so I am hoping for either 2 locked or only the instate teams.

Best guesses:
If 1 locked team a piece:
Michigan-Michigan State
Indiana-Purdue
Northwestern-Illinois
Wisconsin-Minnesota
Nebraska-Iowa
Ohio State-Maryland
Rutgers-Penn State

The last 4 could go any way. Ohio State-Penn State makes more sense in a lot of ways, but if only locking on a piece, I think they would try to match Maryland up with the Buckeyes based on historic success and to avoid being accused of simply grouping the newbies together.

Two games get more complicated. I think they probably would group the 3 eastern schools together on that and call it a day. The others would mix and match more. I would personally prefer Ohio State's other two to be Michigan and Wisconsin, but suspect the Badgers would be locked with 2 western teams.

The appeal of locking one is a single round robin plus + 1 locked h/a makes 14 games. 6 reverse games to spread over 12 remaining teams means that everyone plays everyone except their locked rival 3 times in two years, everyone hosts everyone else three times in four years.

Why not expand the number of games played overall. No reason why the start of the college basketball season cannot be moved up to 10/31-11/1 so that more can be played. Basketball practice starts the last weekend of September at most programs. Move the season up 2 weeks and you start 9/15 which still gives the students 3 weeks before practice starts up.

Afterall even with the multiple post season tournaments, the vast majority of programs seasons are over by March 10-15th. With about 350 D1 programs, you have 66 in the NCAA, 32 in NIT, 16 in one of the other tournaments and 24 in the other so that totals up to 138 which is only 40% of all teams at most. Half of those 138 are eliminated in the first game of the tourneys they play in which drops the % playing down to 20 by March 20th.

UPDATE

https://www.fanragsports.com/rothstein-big-ten-head-coaches-vote-in-favor-of-schedule-change-2/

Quote:The head coaches in the Big Ten have voted in favor of going to a 20-game conference schedule, multiple sources told FanRag Sports on Sunday.

The shift is expected to begin during the 2018-19 season.

FanRag Sports reported on Aug. 22 that programs in the league were told to be “prepared” for the change a year from now.

“It’s going to happen,” one source told FanRag Sports. “They’re going to go to 20 games.”

The ACC announced last July that it will go to 20 conference games during the 2019-20 season.

Big Ten Media Day is Thursday at Madison Square Garden.
