Rivalry Week - Ewglenn - 11-25-2017 09:54 AM

Is there any team(s) that you think could grow into a big time rivalry game that LU ends every year with? BYU or ODU are obvious to me but anyone else? Growing up a Clemson fan we always looked forward to this weekend and I would love for LU to have the same.

Which games will you be watching today?

RE: Rivalry Week - LUgrad2000 - 11-25-2017 10:07 AM

My list for rivals:
1. BYU
2. ODU
3. JMU
4. Army

ODU could become a reality down the realignment road.
If I am BYU, LU is like playing Tocoa Falls. If they were ever to view us as a peer, we could make it happen.
JMU could down the realignment road.
Army has this thing with Navy already.

Notre Dame, Virginia, and Virginia Tech are my top but impossible. Army doesn't do much for me. I respect them but as far as football goes I just view them as a nationally recognized former glory that struggles to be bowl eligible now. Plus they have Navy as a bitter rival.

BYU is interesting. Unfortunately they have Utah as a bitter rival so we'd never be first. Old Dominion makes a ton of sense. They don't have a current rival that I know of and they are in-state. We ought to play them in all sports every year. Provides great exposure across the state for both of us.

West Virginia has no rival in the Big 12 and don't play any traditional rivals annually. Baylor could be possible if they were booted from the Big 12 or we joined and TCU left.

JMU just isn't an option to me. They have made it clear they don't want to be associated with LU at anything so they stay in FCS.

Is it okay to be rivalry-less?

It is okay but isn't college football better because of the rivalries?

It is a good point. Being "rivalry-less" could form into an identity. Could create an "us against the world" mentality.

Penn State has been using the slogan of "Unrivaled" since James Franklin took over. Part of the meaning refers to having no rival.

We could but I like the rivalry games. I don't think there is anything wrong with not having a rival. CCU obviously makes sense since there already is animosity between the two sides. I will be interested to see how things play out. This week just gets me fired up(see what I did there?) and would like for LU to join the party.

Pretty much ODU. They are in state, comparatively same competitively (assumed), and may be willing to play us regularly. And, they don’t have a current rival either and we could play on rivalry week.

We have no one else. Maybe, nah, that’s all I’ve got.

RE: Rivalry Week - Cider Jim - 11-26-2017 09:01 AM

1. Baylor (Baptist rival)
2. Old Dominion (in-state)
3. BYU (small pipe dream & part of Doc's vision)
4. Notre Dame (major pipe dream & Doc's vision)
5. Marshall (since WVU won't play them)

RE: Rivalry Week - NewTimes - 11-26-2017 11:20 AM

I like thinking out of the box when these type of futuristic posts are made. What makes a great rivalry? The easy answers are Coastal or ODU on one level, and on a higher level BYU, and the highest level ND.

Rivalry games are not planned, the develop. One game, or a short series of games with little impact on either team winning or losing, does not create a rivalry. The best rivalries are when one or both teams are playing for something significant and the opposing team squashes that hope. Sure Coastal, Chuck South rained on LU's parade in BSC games. And there was little interest beyond Central VA or Charleston of CCU.

LU can and should do better with developing rivalries. LU simply has more assets and and upside for success than most other schools. Does anyone really expect to see Coastal go beyond the Sun Belt? Sure ODU has been bantered around as a potential move up to the AAC if and when reorganization or expansion happens again. But ODU is restrained by being a state school and lacks the ability to make fast decisions, especially involving scheduling, and the creativity and funding sometimes required in scheduling, that LU has.

So who is a future rival for LU? As long as LU is an indy, LU will lack yearly conference games that help develop a rival. The best LU can hope for in the immediate future is to get as good as it can, to win games that diminishes the opposing teams's success, and hope those teams are on LU's schedule for future games. So all games that LU plays as an indy with significance for the opposing team will literally be rivalry games. And when LU can steal a win on those occasions, hello rivalry. Just think how cool it's going to be when LU beats a high power P5 team playing for a significant bowl seeding, national ranking, or even the CFP final 4.

Yep, Coastal makes a lot if sense, but it seems as though they have no interest in playing us.

I bet NMSU or UMass could become rivals simply based on the number of times we’ll play each other as independents.

I feel like UMASS would make some sense. They don't really have anyone that I know of.

Even if they are not rivals I want to play the following teams on a regular basis:
Notre Dame, BYU, Viriginia, Va. Tech, ODU, Army, Navy, Air Force

And I want to play annually in CA, TX, FL and KY (my home).

We aren't going to be rivals with an FCS school so go ahead and forget about JMU.

JMU will only be a rival to LU when, and if, they become FBS.

That's also if JMU wanted to be a rival. They wanted no part of that when both were FCS.
