The problem is that ECU is probably going to be outbid for him unless they do the deal soon. USF, UConn and Memphis will probably all be in the market for him too. Not quite. UCONN's name alone puts it into prime position to land quality recruits that most other AAC programs have no chance. It's a matter of finding someone who can develop that talent. RE: ECU's next Basketball Coach? - AGuyIn_Water - 01-18-2018 10:27 PM What is the timeline of ECU's coaching search? After the season to announce the hire or what? The reality is with Lebo stepping down we aren't losing any money and I believe he was making around $1 million a year, so one would think we could at least offer that if necessary, so hopefully money won't be too big of an issue of hiring any low-major coach, which if I had to guess is going to be the route we go. I think Dooley only makes a base of $225,000, so we should be able to more than double it. There's been some discussion that Joe Dooley may be interested. The drum I’ve been beating for what is it now? 3 Years? But there are a few certain users up here who are deluded and just want to blame Ruff and call me an idiot every time I present facts to back up every one of my claims. RE: ECU's next Basketball Coach? - oasispirate - 01-20-2018 09:36 AM Some names not mentioned in this thread or mentioned once that should be given a lot of consideration. UNCA Nick McDevitt C of C Earl Grant Winthrop Pat Kelsey NCSU asst Tekayo Siddle (should've gotten the UNCW job last year) If I had to bet on anyone right now I'd guess Joe Dooley or Moton, but it could easily be a name not mentioned either. I'm sure we will look at him, I'm not quite as gung ho as some are about him. He's had success but it has been in the MEAC which is currently the worst conference in all of division 1. While I certainly feel he should be a candidate, I hope we shoot a little higher and see if we can't find someone that's had success in a much more competitive league. RE: ECU's next Basketball Coach? - nomad2u2001 - 01-22-2018 05:45 PM Crean: the best candidate. Unlikely that he says yes if certain teams end up also looking for coaches at season's end. Only ended up fired because of Indiana's delusions. Gottfried: He will win enough to make us respectable. Has NC connections and I believe he could get talent here. He was fired because of two delusional basketball programs. Dooley: Did ok and then not so ok here in his 4 years. Had some bad breaks, but was gearing up for some success with his recruiting classes. He was fired at 33 and spent almost 15 quality seasons at NM, Wyoming, and KU. Some years later, he has won 20 games in each of his seasons returned as a head coach. Moton: A winner where he's been. Has lots of NC connections, especially in the triangle. Was able to get R. Purvis and John Wall to visit as a favor. I believe there are lots of upper level HS prospects in NC that he has wanted, but couldn't get as a MEAC coach. Fear not ECU fans. Of all our coaching prospects, most would surely increase the amount of wins per year. I think most could get us 19-20 wins or more. RE: ECU's next Basketball Coach? - MemTGRS - 01-22-2018 05:58 PM I think I would make a run first at Steve Forbes. I see him as more of a natural for the area than Crean. While I don't think "area" is nearly as big of a deal in hoops as football ---- from Assistant at Michigan State, to head coach at Marquette and Indiana he just screams MIDWEST to me. Especially considering his wife is the sister of the Harbaughs. But still close #2 to Forbes. I do recall Dooley (#3) bringing in three (I think) Top 100 early signees to Greenville in one class. That was when they were football-only in C-USA, though, and thus more impressive when you realize it was CAA. But I might be wrong -- that was around 20 years ago and since not yet fully in C-USA, it was harder to keep up with ECU hoops. My memory I am sure is clouded. The concerns about Moton (#4) only being a MEAC/CIAA guy are valid. But if you can obtain some decent ex-head coach, that bridges that in my opinion. Heck, if he could retain Perry and/or Wojchik, you have it right there. The MEAC is internally very competitive. Thing is, the teams have to play several bodybag games before conference play starts. Delaware State had Nebraska, Depaul, Pitt, and others. Only 5 home games before conference play. Norfolk State had Auburn and only 6 home games before the start of conference play. Coppin had Oregon, Cincy, Rutgers, Georgetown, UConn, West Virginia, Georgia Tech, and Penn State. 2 home games before conference play. Morgan State had 2 home games before conference play. Howard had Gonzaga, Indiana, and Georgetown and 2 home games before conf. Eastern Shore had Maryland, Georgetown, Creighton, Virginia Tech, Iowa State and 3 home games before conf. A&T had Clemson, Georgetown, Virginia Tech and had 5 homes before conf. But when it comes to internal play. You have to be legit to gut it through because anybody can beat anyone in that conference. Making it out of that tourney is a feat. |
