Coogs #13

Pretty good. Now if only we had anything to show for it in the postseason. Gotta get it done in that department.

Stetson and UCF have got to be in there somewhere; top 50 I'd think. Both have been ranked here and there a lot over the years and both put several people in the Majors.

Winning a Regional at The Box was pretty good, but I agree, we have to break through to the CWS.

As mentioned the Coogs won that Baton Rouge regional.

Conference tournaments are postseason. We've won a couple of those.

We've also hosted two regionals.

All of those are things to show for the postseason. I want a breakthrough to the CWS too, but let's acknowledge the program's meaningful successes.

Coogs #13

Look who is sitting at #8.

RE: top baseball schools over last 5 years - TheOrigamiJimmyChin - 02-02-2018 10:22 AM

Only 4 of the 16 teams listed have NOT been to the CWS in the last five years:

Dallas Baptist (never been to CWS)
South Carolina (last appearance 2012)
Louisiana (last appearance 2000)
Houston (last appearance 1967)

:(

NYU, Northern Colorado, Southern Illinois, UT-Rio Grande Valley, and Cal State Los Angeles have all been to the CWS more recently than UH. Time for the Coogs to change that.

Look I'm not trying to rag on the program. Overall its been really good. Lot of regular season success and numerous draft picks. The team that won in Baton Rouge was awesome and imo got royally screwed by having to travel to Austin the following week. With that said, we're one of 4 schools on that list (Louisiana, SC, and Dallas Baptist) to not make a single CWS appearance in that 5 year stretch. Additionally hosting a regional isn't indicative of quality postseason play but rather a reward for playing well in the regular season. As you pointed out we've hosted two regionals in the last 5 years, but we've also failed to make it out of our own regional either time. Not every host wins their regional but to not be able to get it done at home is still embarrassing. Like I said we have a solid program. Maybe even top 30 in the country, but until we start making some real noise in the postseason list like these feel a little hollow. Just my opinion. Still love the team regardless!

Really felt like last year was the year. Not sure if we've got the bats to do it this year. Pitching should be pretty deep though.

When does baseball season start?

RE: top baseball schools over last 5 years - TheOrigamiJimmyChin - 02-02-2018 10:48 AM

Trying not to whine, but UH got royally screwed with our two best teams in the last 15 years...both getting sent to Austin for Super Regionals when we deserved to host.

2002 was the worst. As I recall we were ranked #6 in the country, but didn't get a protected 8 seed. UH caused a problem for the NCAA and their post 9/11 "travel ban". With Rice, Texas and Houston all ranked in the Top 6, the NCAA didn't have the balls to put three Super Regionals within 150 miles of each other...so UH got the short end of the stick, and sent to Austin to play the eventual National Champions.

Yeah, I might still hold a grudge over that.

2013 sucked as well. Between the last 3 weeks of the regular season, the conference tourney, and the LSU regional the team played exceptionally well 5 straight weeks on the road. That team earned the right to host the regional and the fans deserved the right to see the team. I think bogus that even seeded teams get to out bid the other for host rights in the super. The tiebreaker should go to which ever team won against a national seed as they had to face tougher competition.

Yeah, NCAA baseball tourney sucks in that way, that the highest bidder gets to host over the most qualified team. And if the bid is between UH and UT-Austin, we're not going to win.

Adding WSU to the western side of the league should help some if they are competitive. The western side needed more teams and drivable games. And of course WSU has that national baseball championship from the 80s to show off.
Maybe the discussion of adding Dallas Baptist in baseball should ignite again this spring.

Ooo La La. I like to give them a hard time over their attempt to re-brand, but I have a ton of respect for their baseball progrsm. Our battles with them over the past couple of years have been intense.
