ESPN Game DAY same B.S. - Hilltop75 - 02-03-2018 12:29 PM

They were playing a game with the hosts. Kind of like the old "Lets make a deal quiz show. So they would pull a card out that said something like Auburn to the sweet 16, or Texas A&M to the NIT. Then the host would have to agree or disagree and receive a gift behind the curtain.

They must have had a dozen cards and in every case it was a team from a so called "Power 5 " conference. Not one school from any other conference. A good question would have been: "Will the CUSA Champion win a first round game for the 4th consecutive year"

Man it is so universal the way that damn network just promotes the same freaking teams even in a goofy game they were playing.

You know what most people don't remember is in the early 80's ESPN had no college basketball games on air. All the games were only on CBS,NBC & ABC and it was the Sun Belt that had the first Basketball game of the week to air on ESPN.

Back then the Sun Belt had WKU, UAB, ODU VCU, USF ,USA, Charlotte and Jacksonville. (one year that group of teams sent 4 teams to March Maddness)

So many teams that are in CUSA today gave ESPN their start when they were a start up network.

It’s been this way for 15 years at least. It’s partly why smaller conf don’t get any teams in at large anymore. The perception ESPN gives off is that only P5+Big East play good basketball. Then that is proven wrong during the tournament. By the time the next season rolls around any outrage from previous season is gone and it starts all over than a 17-15 team p5 should make the tournament over 25-7 teams from smaller conf.

That's the natural course of things though. Fledgling networks (ESPN back then) will carry relatively insignificant games, while the flag-bearers televise the big boys. Over time, as ESPN gained credibility, proved their mettle, increased their revenue, and expanded, they consequently started carrying the bigger games.

This is crying over spilled milk, and has been discussed ad nauseam. Of course they're gonna promote the same teams if those are mainly the teams they're carrying on their networks. It's about ratings, and the more recognizable schools are gonna bring home that bacon. C-USA just needs to do a better job at promoting our brand, and our programs likewise need to step up because air-time isn't about handouts, and networks don't operate on socialistic principles. But that's also been discussed many times over.

If you are talking about games between top 20 SBC teams as relatively insignificant games. Then you are correct. But the networks carried regional games and maybe 1 national game of the week.

Back then over 50% of these P5 conferences were the bottom of the barrel and not household names. ESPN made those schools what they are today by investing billions of dollars and then promoting those conferences.

Called protecting your investment. ESPN has billions of dollars tied up in P5 conferences and they have a bag of peanuts and a 12oz double cola invested in CUSA

ESPN is the worse thing to happen to college sports for those of us that started watching before they existed

Thanks to ESPN, there are many, many, MANY more basketball games to be seen these days than there ever were prior to the network existing. Think about ESPU, ESPN2, ESPN3, etc. And if ESPN hadn't come along and tied up their money in P5 conferences, ABC, CBS, NBC, or someone else would've. So I'm sorry, but I can't agree with you. The more networks there are carrying sports, the better chance the less notable schools have of their games being aired at least somewhere.

I think the truth lies somewhere in the middle of you two, like a catch 22, double edged sword or a similar cliche'. ESPN likes to keep the so called P5 teams separated from the "others". That is why often when they give a stat, usually in FBS football it is often quantified as among P5 teams.

You are looking at it as a fan sitting on the couch not what was best for the sport. Sports are better if viewed in person and the number of games shown has lowered that amount for the teams that espn refuses to show.

If you asked 100 basketball fans that just started watching the game of basketball since 1980 to list the better basketball programs historically. Western would be ranked at the bottom. When in fact historically Western would be top 2. ESPN made those other schools what they are today. Use any metric you want and I can make that case. Now if we are just talking 1990 up...no

Western
Kansas State
Texas Christian
Iowa State
Baylor
Texas Tech
Clemson
Miami (FL)
Virginia Tech
Boston College
Wake Forest
Pittsburgh
Florida State

Agree, ESPN absolutely the worst thing to happen to college sports in history. The bottom is about to fall in for the NCAA...

Number two nationwide because of your success all those years in the Ohio Valley Conference? Surely you're joking. Look, I think you guys have had a terrific basketball program for many years, certainly much better than our program has been since our inception in the early 80's, but Ohio Valley is Ohio Valley.

I listed a bunch of schools espn made when we are talking basketball. Where did I say nationally? As far as the OVC the conference had a couple teams ranked, a few years pre-1980. Hell as Middle fans the OVC from the 40s through the 70s would make todays CUSA their b*tch. Below are a couple snapshots of Western's history. Those years where Western did not go to the NCAA tourney early on...the NIT was the national tourney.

Yeah, but even playing in that little OVC Western was a NATIONAL program. Hell Western was paid top dollar (back then) to be one of the schools to make the trip to NY and play a tourney in the Garden. Yearly. I believe it was 3 other teams from the north.

The OVC started falling off in the very late 70s because of probation conference wide. Today the charges would be a slap on the wrist...with a lost of 1 scholarship or something like that. Not post season ban. The SBC was so strong in the 80s it took Western 3 years to be competitive. But then again...SBC was espn's baby and had national games of the week.

RE: ESPN Game DAY same B.S. - TTT - 02-03-2018 02:05 PM

Is called protecting and promoting your investments. Why would ESPN want to give any air time to a product/service they have ZERO investment in? Why would they want to give any credence to their competition? Once CUSA gave ESPN the middle finger that essentially turned us into a brand/service competitor (a very meaningless one at that). If you don't have a deal with ESPN then you do not exist because ESPN/Disney dominate world-wide sports media. We ostracized ourselves when we left ESPN.

LOL, well if you didn't mean nationally, then what exactly did you mean then when you said, "If you asked 100 basketball fans that just started watching the game of basketball since 1980 to list the better basketball programs historically. Western would be ranked at the bottom. When in fact historically Western would be top 2." Did you perhaps mean top 2 in the Ohio Valley?

Look, it's cool that you guys were so great in the OVC and the Sun Belt and that those conferences were better a half century ago than they are today. But this discussion is really getting kinda silly because again, if ESPN hadn't come along and tied up their money in P5 conferences, ABC, CBS, NBC, or someone else would have.

This is just as I described in my first reply, which is to say that it's crying over spilled milk, because what you're whining about would've inevitably happened with or without ESPN. They're just not the evil overlord you're making them out to be. In the end, Franko is probably right in saying it's somewhere between our views, but all this basically amounts to complaining about the other guys at the dance getting more attention from the ladies than you did. Sorry, it happens.

Well you just proved his point.

Look at what’s happened to baseball over the last decade. P5 schools started throwing tons of money he at it after sucking forever.

That’s what happened to basketball in the early 80s.
Example: the SEC
Until about 1988 it was Kentucky and 9 bums. (Actually, with the probation, Kentucky had become a bum too.)
Other than a couple of spurts here and there by other teams (Maravich, Ernie and Bernie, the F Troop), SEC hoops was ****.

The ACC and the Big 10 have always been great. Then the Big East came along. But most of those schools on that list would have been playing for scraps in the old OVC and early Sun Belt.

No, because my point is that everything he and a couple others are attributing to ESPN would've happened regardless, meaning that ESPN isn't responsible for what they're seeing with college basketball, rather that it was bound to be the natural course this whole thing would take even if they had never appeared on the scene. Please keep up.
