ESPN Plus - Fort Bend Owl - 02-06-2018 06:47 PM

So they announced today ESPN's new streaming app is going to be $4.99 a month, and will feature thousands of new programming not available elsewhere.

Does that mean it might include CUSA events, or are we likely going to be squeezed out again?

Not really sure how this impacts football or basketball. Unless they are planning to make people pay for their ESPN3 football games.

They have previously stated this is where they intend to monetize much of their non-P5 content.

I find the following statement confusing.

ESPN Plus will not contain access to SportsCenter or to live ESPN channels, as Iger says Disney will not make ESPN Plus available unless you’re a “traditional or non-traditional” subscriber of standard ESPN.

What is a non-traditional subscriber? I thought that's what they were targeting with this.

Playstation Vue etc. I have internet only service plus ESPN on Vue so I have ESPN3 as well.

I think it is a silly idea, why should I pay for ESPN plus and NOT get access to the general ESPN content? I understand Disney wanting to keep the cable revenue. This may be Disney's way of appeasing cable, otherwise the cable companies could easily unbundle ESPN.

My guess is they have to structure it that way to comply with current cable agreements. As carriage agreements are renewed, they will likely reserve the right to stream ESPN direct to the consumer like HBO.

I wonder if you'll get your regional ESPN Plus for free on cable/satellite, but you'll have to purchase all the rest.

Because isn't ESPN Plus replacing the local Fox Sports Nets?

RE: ESPN Plus - WKUFan518 - 02-07-2018 07:55 AM

Please tell me CUSA will not go to this platform! Talking about selling out for a service no one will watch, rather remain on Stadium and Bein if this is only other option....Either way I would hope WKU would remain on FCS for most games...

RE: ESPN Plus - MUsince96 - 02-07-2018 08:25 AM

How will this be different than ESPN3? Will they phase out ESPN3 into ESPN+? If so, they'll begin charging $5 for what came free with your cable/satellite subscription.

Sort of. Basically, its a new place for ESPN to put some of the content and a new way to monetize it. The way I understand ti, ESPN-Plus will have some exclusive live content not available elsewhere.

RE: ESPN Plus - WKUYG - 02-07-2018 03:41 PM

My guess....

espn is no longer giving away free content that was on espn3 and will move a lot of games over to + and unless you get espn through cable or streaming you will not get the content shown on espn, espn2, espnu. If you do and pay the monthly fee you can still use the espn+ app to view those channels

RE: ESPN Plus - ODUODUODU - 02-07-2018 08:00 PM

Now, maybe it's just me, but college was very confusing times.

regardless....the .eu is always there.....

whatever esPeNis does, I'll never care ever again....

ESPN are hemorrhaging subscribers in the first place...they really think the subscribers that are staying will pay an upcharge?

I will happily pay more if it means no more games on CUSA.tv.

RE: ESPN Plus - AdoptedMonarch - 02-08-2018 08:36 AM

This season has (re)taught me that radio is not at all a bad way to follow a game, especially supplemented by on-line, real-time stats.

Hearkening (is that a word?) back to the old days........

Man, it would be funny if someone could fark Judy into one of these old radio photos.

RE: ESPN Plus - Old Dominion - 02-08-2018 04:06 PM

I actually really enjoy listening to basketball on the radio when you have real professional announcers.

RE: ESPN Plus - msm96wolf - 02-08-2018 04:38 PM

Well, I hate to see ESPN go this route. I enjoy catching some of the G5 games on ESPN3 but I would not pay extra to get them.

Just another way to squeeze us.

Out of sight, out of mind.
