MAC thoughts - Ewglenn - 02-10-2018 07:13 PM

IMO I think getting into a FBS conference is still the best option. I think the MAC would make sense. What if Liberty and UMASS went in as full members and got Army to agree to a Notre Dame type of agreement. Would you be interested in leaving Indy?

The odds of any of your suggestion happening any time soon are very remote. We are fine for now.

The MAC would be okay but hopefully temporary. They have shown a propensity of earning the NY6 slot for the G5 so that helps their cause with me.

In my opinion, if we are only going to play 1 - 3 P5 schools a year, then we ought to join a conference. We wouldn't be establishing ourselves and getting a benefit of being independent and it would do us well to improve the home of all our other sports. Obviously we'd need an invite somewhere which seems to be the current problem.

If our goal is to be a P5, then we should try to play as many as possible. We are currently an unknown as far as our football goes, and it would do us well to play as many known schools as we could. Heck, we're more known for being "Falwell's school" than our academics or athletics so we need to make everyone more aware of our FBS football team and our Division I athletics.

Rating current FBS leagues LU would like to/consider for membership would be a) MAC, b) C-USA or c) SBC. Most in our region could name only a handful of schools in the MAC that play FB. An initial indy schedule playing as many P5 teams seems the better path. Eventually wins will occur for LU. And with high profile wins comes recognition, and improvement in recruiting players and an advancement in all ways. LU will take it's lumps but the wins will happen in time. I like the current schedule attracting P5 teams on the schedule with home and return games coming to LU. True the MAC would be a better home for all other sports than the Big South.

There is no way of knowing what the FBS landscape will look like in the next 6-7 years as the GORs for the ACC & Big XII begin to expire. Hopefully we are well positioned to leverage the situation whatever that might look like at that stage. Based on current structures, CUSA is the only viable option for us and it is a stretch to say it could work in the best interests for either party. We would love to be in the AAC but we are not a good fit at our current state. Joining the MAC or Belt at this stage would bring very little upside outside of bowl tie-ins and a tad better hoops situation (higher caliber but tougher path to auto bids). TV revenue is practically non-existent and neither league has teams that would move the needle much for our fanbase.

Bottom line, we are FBS Indy to stay until the landscape changes significantly. And frankly I am liking this situation more every day and I suspect our administration feels the same way.

Want no part of the MAC, not that it was or ever will be an option.
