Looks like an important three-week stretch for certain coaches.
The standings tonight line up in a very interesting way:
1) Tier One: safe, but ready to move? Grant, Coen and Shaver would probably go 1-2-3 in Coach of the Year voting and all seem very secure in their jobs. I don't think Shaver is looking to go anywhere but both Grant and Coen would seem to be good candidates for other jobs, especially if either wins the regular season & CAAT.
2) Tier Two: solid programs but what's up this year? You would think Mihalich, Skerry and Matheny would all be secure in their jobs. In fact, a regular season championship and winning the CAAT might have made any of these candidates to move up. Instead, as of now, each of their teams has underwhelmed this year. Is it possible they could feel some heat? (I don't think so but ...)
3) Tier Three: what is his name again? McGrath, Spiker, Inglesby and Rowe have a combined seven years at their respective schools. Their jobs are safe and they aren't going anywhere - yet.
A lot can change in the next three years. Shaka Smart was feeling some heat at VCU prior to their deep NCAA run. Any team can get hot and totally change the dynamic around their coach.

Smart had 27 wins year 1 and a CBI championship, and made the final 4 year two.

Serves me right for looking at other school's message boards. I do remember a lot of wailing and moaning, gnashing of teeth over losing Grant as coach. And VCU was 5th and 4th in the CAA regular season in Smart's first two years while Grant had them in regular season 1st place the prior three years.
So maybe it was just noise. Smart's VCU record in retrospect was certainly stellar. But how were the fans feeling at the end of the regular season his second year?
Right now the Hofstra, Towson and Elon message boards are fussing and fuming over their coaches. I think it's just noise but it is interesting.

I think considering what he lost last season Shaver is coach of ths year
As for Grant leaving CofC we have several things going for us. He was raised here. His wife graduated from.CofC. She has expressed more than once she wants to live close to family. Not saying the right money would not lure him away but having decent job where your roots are means a lot to some people.

I would have Coen and Shaver as 1A and 1B for coach of the year. Charleston was supposed to run away with the conference this season with what they returned, so I don't think Grant deserves to get it over the other 2.
I might give it to Shaver just ever so slightly because of the short rotation due to Whitman and Malinowski bailing on us and having to gameplan knowing we pretty much only give extended minutes to 1 player on the bench.

"Add Tony Shaver from William and Mary to the hot seat list
Samantha Huge has ambition to move up, and even though Tony has done a solid job given the restraints, he has made his own bed by being there 15 years with 0 NCAA tournaments"
While I disagree and believe Tony is safe, the next statement got my attention. Apparently, the outside perception of some is that Huge has ambition to move up. I don't think I've heard that directly stated before.

I understand why he’s on the hot seat but I don’t at the same time. We don’t have many seniors on this team (roughly 2 get actual minutes). They’re all young.

Does things the W&M way as far as the student-athlete experience and expectations.
W&M has no history of winning / low expectations as far as winning
Cons
No CAA Titles / NCAAT appearances
Hasn't been here so long that it would impossible to move him. In other words, in another few years, he will stay as long as he wants.
Huge owes him nothing.
Huge seems to want to make a statement and possibly move on to a big school

I don't know who we could get that's better. Maybe Jamion Christian at Mt St Mary's? Former assistant here, but he is a MSM alum, so might hold out for a bigger job before leaving MSM.

My assumption is that Huge or the department has someone in mind if this is being floated around. I doubt we'd fire Tony without a very solid contingency plan. If we are just firing Tony and opening up the position that could be disastrous.

Unless the athletics department is hiding some secret coffer of money to attract a stud coach, you'd be hard pressed to find a better or more loyal coach than Tony Shaver.
I posted that tweet, but totally believe that tweeter has no clue. The Huge ambition part got my interest. I guess it is to be seen.

Team was projected 8th and looks to finish 4-5.
Core of the team is the sophomore class.
Solid recruiting class (which probably would have to be offered releases if we moved on).
Coach is well UNDER-paid, would require about doubling his salary to attract an impact hire.
No reason to believe that budgetary, recruiting, admissions or other restraints on the program are about to be removed or released.
Attendance is up, suggesting enthusiasm is as well.
Maybe allowing a layup at the buzzer is all its takes.
(I have to agree, the tweet probably says more about the perception of Huge among folks who don't follow the CAA than anything else.)

I read the "ambition to move up" as Huge desiring to move the program up.

I've talked to Huge twice and have seen her speak several times. She says the same thing over an over again. She starts by saying that we will provide a great academic and athletic experience for our athletes, but she closes by saying "and we will win championships". I think she means it, and she's Laycock's boss too. I think everyone is fair game.

and he's been nothing but a winner here in wins and losses lately, and a winner as a person during his entire tenure. He's a complete class act.
