2018 scoreboard watching, RPI, Top 25, etc - BeagleUSM - 02-23-2018 04:04 PM

Had a good thread last year. Let’s try this again.

State up 5-0 on UCSB in Corpus Christi. It’s good that they’re winning but now we have to hear about how distracted their players and coaches were and how there should be an asterisk on our series.

On a side note.........Checking scores on warren nolan site and I see where South Dakota St and Bradley (2 of the 5 teams from the SFA tourney) are playing each other at Bradley this weekend.

Leave them be. Not our opponent anymore. Let them circlejerk and we’ll enjoy our own wins.

Rice has dropped their first 3 games at Stanford. Playing again tomorrow.

Looking like another rough year for CUSA.

Rice baseball is in a slump....

actually, their entire sports program(s) is(are) in the same situation as we are......

pardon the pun, but it's 'hit or miss' at this point of revenue vs. cost vs. recruiting......

and their standards are quite higher in the 'intellect category'

it's gotten to the point where 50-cent thinks J-law matters....

help me out how you combat bullies with a Yuge bank account.....you have be living in a cave if you're NOT seeing this one coming.....

Rice will still "be there" in the end.

in conference.....no question....

don't kid yourself, I have the highest respect for their program.....

however, their OOC schedule is a tough piece of meat to swallow 'year in year out' as cusa $$$ dry up vs. the big boys with a soon to be replaced 81 yr. old coach....

I wouldn't be surprised if Graham steps down after this year.....

it's time.....

RE: 2018 scoreboard watching, RPI, Top 25, etc - BeagleUSM - 02-25-2018 09:08 PM

Really early, but our schedule looks like it could be a steaming pile (#shocker). Ole Miss and South Alabama are both safe bets to finish top 25 or top 50 by Selection Monday. The rest doesn't look so good.

Mississippi State - 3-4 on the year. Went 3-1 this week but their 3 wins were over teams with a combined record of 6-13. Only team they played that appears to have somewhat of a pulse is TAMUCC and they lost to them. If they lay an egg at Minute Maid this weekend, that'll be a good indicator that they could struggle just to make the SECT.

Pensacola/Cox Diamond Invitational - looks like a pretty weak field. Eastern Michigan is 1-6 and just lost 2/3 at JSU. Ohio State is 5-3 but their best wins are over a winless Utah team. Nicholls State is also 1-6 and just got swept in the Corpus Christi tourney with 2 of the games being blowouts. Last week they lost 3/4 at home to Stony Brook.

Georgia Southern - 4-3. Swept Fairfield but lost 2/3 to UGA (blew a lead on Sunday that cost them the series). Probably a top 75-100 team, similar to Xavier last year. Not a terrible series, but not great either.

Florida Atlantic - 6-1 with sweeps of George Washington and Delaware. Like most CUSA schools, they play a very weak OOC, so you can't really get a good read on them. Biggest test for them in the non-con is a middling Oregon team next weekend in Eugene (4-game series). Potential to be top 50, but far from a guarantee.

Rice - 3-5 on the year. Sneaked out of Orlando with a 2-1 record (both wins were very close) but got swept in a 4-game series against Stanford this weekend. Starting pitching appears to be OK but bullpen is big problem. Might be a bubble team again.

Old Dominion and FIU were mentioned preseason as possible sleeper teams, but they look mediocre at best so far. ODU lost 2/3 last week in a weak round-robin tournament in Florida and lost 2/3 to K-State at home this weekend. FIU is 3-3 with a series loss to Missouri. Narrowly took a series from SWAC team Grambling this weekend. We don't play Charlotte but they were swept by UGA this week. Just terrible.

Midweekers: ULL is 2-5 and just dropped a home series to Wright State. Granted, Wright State is a strong low-major program but can't drop that series if you're ULL. Wouldn't expect much from the Cajuns this year. Tulane was projected to be in the AAC cellar and just got swept at Ole Miss. UNO took 2/3 at the Sugar Bowl Classic but probably will finish in the 5-8 range in the Southland. Alabama is 7-0 but they've beaten a bunch of cupcakes. Top 50 potential but waiting to see what they do in SEC play. SELA just lost 2/3 at home to UConn (who is good, but SELA needs to win that series), though I think they were supposed to take a step back this year.

TLDR: We might only play 4 top 50 games all year. Not good. Better hope our RPI is top 30 this year or we'll be in trouble for an at-large.

do you pitch Sandlin against OSU on Sat for that series?

(I know what I would do)

I'm curious what the board's thoughts are on this.....

Probably. Though I'd love to have even half of the marquee matchups they have year-in and year-out.

Can he pitch all three games and also come out of the pen to replace himself?

well played 01-ncaabbs

I feel like we stick to our plan and go with Sandlin on Friday, Powers on Saturday with TBD on Sunday. We're gonna need Powers to face tough competition later on so might as well let him get some of it now so later on he is better prepared.

We need Colt Smith back for Sundays. JC can be relief.

while I understand that point, winning that game means more in a one week series than keeping the rotation intact.....it's only a one day change in a one time situation.....

I view it like this.....when you get into the championship play/ws level you'll adjust as req'd.....

IMO, pitching our best vs. the best of the 3 and getting that win means more than the order at this point in the season

RE: 2018 scoreboard watching, RPI, Top 25, etc - BeagleUSM - 02-28-2018 11:03 PM

State is staring at a 26-29, 11-19 SEC type season, I think. Their lineup is made up of some freshmen, a slap hitter from Pearl, and a couple dudes that were decent in JUCO. Maybe they'll turn it around but right now they're struggling against Southland competition (lost to TAMUCC on Sunday as well), and I really think they are going to get eaten alive in SEC play.

It's funny that State sucks, but the joke is on us. We were counting on that series being 3 top 50 (or top 25) wins for us. Should have scheduled a series with ECU, Houston, or DBU along with MSU. Can't schedule OOC games more than 4 hours away from Hattiesburg, apparently.
