NIT - swampcougar1 - 02-23-2018 09:45 PM

Realize NU has good chance to win CAA tourney but would they have chance to go to NIT as an at large selection. We were at large selection last year. I think they are deserving myself

RE: NIT - EvanJ - 02-24-2018 08:22 AM

If NIT teams were selected by the RPI, Northeastern would make it. They're 64th, and top conference teams get called NCAA Tournament bubble teams with RPIs there.

Last year CofC was 62 and made it. So if NU wins at least one or two, they’ll likely be in. Likely the same situation as last year with UNCW and CofC, only UNCW’s RPI was much better (I think it was in the high 20s).

It all depends how many auto bids get used from conference upsets. That changes drastically year to year

100 teams make the NCAA or NIT. I think the combined NCAA and NIT automatic bids for teams not in the Top 100 will be under 30, so a Top 70 team would make the NIT if the RPI was used.

RE: NIT - geewizNU - 02-25-2018 02:17 AM

We definitely have a legit shot now that we’re Co-Champs with CofC, plus we have an higher RPI and strength of schedule.

RE: NIT - swampcougar1 - 02-25-2018 01:46 PM

Would be no huge surprise to me if both of us are in the NIT. CAA tourney could be full of so called upsets. .No team in CAA really dominant over everyone else this year

RE: NIT - J.B. - 02-26-2018 07:50 AM

From what I've seen recently, the NIT is now just a way to get more postseason play for power conference teams, and another opportunity to screw over mid-majors. Charleston would obviously get into the NIT if they don't win the CAA Tournament. But I will make a bold prediction that if CoC gets the automatic bid, Northeastern will be pushed aside to make sure that each power conference gets about 10-13 teams into the NCAA/NIT.

This guy currently sees Northeastern in the 7 seed range for the NIT. If they do not win in Charleston, they better hope there are not a lot of midmajor upsets in championship week.

Last year CoC got in as a 5 seed with an RPI of 62. Northeastern is currently at 60, so I think that is a good sign.

Do they have rule requiring teams to be at least .500 to make the NIT? Of the 75 teams in the top six conferences, 59 are at least .500. Joe Lunardi has those conferences combing for 36 NCAA Tournament teams. If 15 (almost two-thirds) of the other 23 make the NIT, that leaves 17 spots. The top team in each conference and the Conference RPI are not in the same order, but I'll use that to estimate. The CAA is 12th in the Conference RPI. Last season, conferences ranked 13th or worse got 7 automatic NIT bids. That leaves 10 spots. Then I looked at teams from Conferences 7 through 11 with a better RPI than Northeastern but who are not locks. Houston (21st in the RPI but you never know), Temple, Loyola-Chicago, Boise State, and Buffalo are the only 5 teams in that group. Loyola-Chicago and Buffalo are the best RPI team in conferences with nobody else with a better RPI than Northeastern. That leaves 5 to 7 spots (depending on how you treat Loyola-Chicago and Buffalo) for teams including Northeastern. If Northeastern loses in the Semifinals or Final, I'd be really surprised if they don't make the NIT. Even with a Quarterfinal loss, they would have a chance.

Rider got upset in their QF game in MAAC tournament giving NIT it's first auto bid

RE: NIT - solohawks - 03-03-2018 06:46 AM

UNC Asheville fell last night as well
Half of the 4 #8 seeds are taken

Rider is 65th in the RPI. They will get better than an 8 seed. 12 conferences don't have anybody with a better RPI than Rider, and favoring teams in the best conferences can't hurt Rider when comparing mid-majors. UNC Asheville could get an 8 seed but it's too early to guarantee that.

RE: NIT - solohawks - 03-03-2018 10:26 PM

Rider may not get an 8th seed. But half of the team's who would have gotten 8 seeds got knocked off bubble

RE: NIT - solohawks - 03-03-2018 10:35 PM

Northern Kentucky joins the NIT auto club. 3 bids already with only 1 conference tournament done. Teams like Belmont get crushed by this

RE: NIT - dan10 - 03-07-2018 12:51 PM

Too many autobids. NU will not make the field, which is unfortunate.

RE: NIT - EvanJ - 03-08-2018 09:01 PM

If NU misses the NIT, teams with worse RPIs will have gotten in at-large. There could be top conference teams who get at-large bids to the NCAA Tournament with worse RPIs than NU. Joe Lunardi has the Big 12 with 8 NCAA Tournament teams, and the eighth best RPI in the Big 12 is worse than NU.

RE: NIT - swampcougar1 - 03-08-2018 09:29 PM

Just saw a nit projection. Had NU as a 7 seed. Had several teams with worse rpi but higher seeds in same bracket. Dav rpi 80 but projected 5 seed same bracket as NU

RE: NIT - solohawks - 03-08-2018 09:40 PM

NE should get in but ya never know how power conferences will be favored

RE: NIT - dan10 - 03-09-2018 02:37 PM

I believe MTSU is added to this list and take another spot from someone. I dont see MTSU's resume as tournament bound, even with a crazy high RPI
