2018 National Champion Women's Lacrosse thread - Duke Dawg - 02-26-2018 11:38 AM

I figured this deserves its own thread since our WLax team is awesome this year.

current poll just came out and we are ranked #5

this weekend, UNC (who we beat) took out top ranked Maryland (who we play later).
curiously enough though, UNC still ranked ahead of us at #3

stony Brook is #1. for first time ever in program's history.

top 20 games we have left this year:

#4 Maryland
#9 Towson
#11 Virginia
#15 Penn State

We should have run our head coach out of town after going 25-25 overall and 9-12 CAA in her first 3 years... http://www.jmusports.com/coaches.aspx?rc=1530&path=wlax

I watched the game this past Saturday against High Point. It looked like HPU was giving the Dukes all they could handle, but the Dukes defense was stout against their top threat (she scored a goal, but it was with a couple minutes left in the game). Romesburg is on fire to start the year. Five goals in every game, except against VT; she scored a "lowly" four. My concern is that against both VT and HPU the team started off slow before turning on the jets. Against UNC, they traded goals early on before finally breaking through. While the formula has worked so far, we will need to eventually start fast, especially against those ranked foes ahead. I'm really hoping they show more games on Madizone, or even stream on Facebook or Twitter rather than forcing fans to pay through the LAX subscription.

Dukes #2 behind Stony Brook in the other poll.

I was looking last week and was excited about our ranking, although it was kinda a buzzkill having Stoney Brook #2

I was lucky to attend the High Point game this weekend and the slow start was a concern. That said, JMU is really deep and not reliant on any one player - even Romesburg who scored the first three goals didn't have to sustain that to keep the attack going. Plus you can tell on the field (and from the parents) that the two big-name freshman are only going to get more comfortable and gain bigger roles (Haggerty who is quick and Chicoskey who is figuring it out). The big thing is they need their top six or seven core players to stay healthy as a group because this team's strength is clearly in numbers. Romesburg, Warden, Haven, Gaudian, Kerrigan, Johnson, and Sdanowich as a group are tough to stop for 60 minutes.

Definitely hoping to get to watch them online more this season too.

Hmmmmm.... I did no more research (too lazy and I've got to go to work), but the write-up says this, "In her first season at JMU in 2007, she led the Dukes to as high as No. 5 in the nation while being a mainstay in the national polls every week of the season. Madison was also ranked as high as No. 5 in 2008 and No. 16 in 2009 before the record-breaking year in 2010. In 2011, Madison finished the season ranked No. 11 in the nation while taking the CAA Tournament title before dropping a tough 11-10 decision to Princeton in the first round of the NCAA Tournament."

JMU crushes Temple 19-7 and advances to 5-0.

Looked into this a bit, and I am not seeing the Dukes ranked #5 in 2008. Unless they were ranked #5 in RPI or some obscure ranking guide at some point, the highest I see on jmusports.com's write ups is #12. I am seeing the #16 ranking for the Lax team in 2009, though. The problem with those two years is the lack of success in the CAA. We were ranked in the preseason, lost to a bunch of very good ACC/Ivy League teams (mostly in the top 10), so we were ranked in the 15-20 range heading into CAA play. The team then went 3-4 and 1-6, respectively in the conference. Not trying to pick a fight, but just following up and doing some research. In my opinion though, none of that matters. What matters is the below:

The WL Dukes have three straight NCAA appearances, and this year's team is off to a great start. Next game is big, as it is at home against a ranked opponent (on Madizone btw). Let's continue to get behind this team and thank the fact that we have a great coach and great student-athletes.

Go Dukes!

#3 Dukes lead #20 Penn State 7-4 at the half. Game is being streamed live via MadiZone from Sentara Park.

RE: 2018 Women's Lacrosse thread - ParentofJMUMRDs - 03-07-2018 03:37 PM

Dukes up 12-5 over Penn State with about 15 minutes left in the 2nd half.

Update: Dukes piling it on now, up 13-5 with less than 14 minutes to go!!

Update: Penn State scores four in a row to make it 13-9 with about 8 minutes to go.

Update: Dukes score to make it 14-9 with 6 minutes to go!!

Update: PSU gets a free position shot and scores. 14-10 with about 5 minutes to go.

Update: PSU scores again with 4 minutes to go. 14-11 Dukes. Last 12 minutes or so have all been in JMU territory!!

Update: JMU goalie gets a yellow card and has to go out. PSU gets another free position shot and scores. Now 14-12 with about 3:30 to go!!!

The Dukes survive a furious second half comeback by PSU and pull out the win 14-12!!!!

Go Dukes!!

Brian

RE: 2018 Women's Lacrosse thread - AssyrianDuke - 03-07-2018 04:00 PM

Dukes take a timeout to try and settle things down. JMU had a similar late game swoon against High Point, but it was far later in the game. Definitely need a goal for the Good Gals (or even a good offensive possession) to help rally the morale.

RE: 2018 Women's Lacrosse thread - AssyrianDuke - 03-07-2018 04:05 PM

That bounce goal we gave up looked embarrassing.

RE: 2018 Women's Lacrosse thread - AssyrianDuke - 03-07-2018 04:16 PM

One minute left. Good gals up 2.

RE: 2018 Women's Lacrosse thread - AssyrianDuke - 03-07-2018 04:17 PM

And that's game. Dukes withstand a late Nittany Lion rally to win 14-12. Good win over a ranked team.
