Marshall basketball accepts a CIT bid, will host... - CoachMaclid - 03-07-2018 10:52 AM

If not selected for the NCAA or NIT, Marshall will host a CIT game on Monday at 6pm, per announcement from Marshall ticket office. Opponent is to be determined. Tickets on sale now.

They probably should have waited to make that call. Now the motivation of desperation to keep extending the season is diminished since there is a consolation prize.

Why announce that before the first conference tournament game is even played?

So strange.

D’antoni announced a week ago that we’d accept a bid to any postseason tournament this year for experience as we have the entire team expected to return next year. Also mentioned they would look to “buy” home games until the semifinals (depending on ticket sales?). I think this is to give the athletic department a week to sell tickets for a game that -barring us winning the conference tournament this week - we’re destined to play in.

Like this upcoming Monday!? IDK....that's asking a lot! If Marshall played in the championship game and lost, that's potentially 4 games in 5 days! Not including travel from the tourney...

Marshall has some major respect for MTSU. (or maybe UTSA).

I agree it's strange but the reasoning could be to give fans a few days notice in the event they don't make the NCAAs or NIT. IMO though, if Marshall makes the CCG (and loses) they should be a lock for a NIT spot as that would put them at 22-11. The only way they should play the Monday game is if they lose in their first or second game in Frisco. Probably a little bit of looking ahead as you don't want to tell fans on Sunday afternoon "we're playing tomorrow night" especially the way the CIT works where you have to pay to play.

No one in our league should be playing in the CIT sans one simple exception.

If you have a very young team (like starting three freshmen) who need more game experience that will help toward building for next year.

This does not describe Marshall. The Herd will be loaded with upperclassmen next year. IMO, Marshall should hold out for the NIT (if they don't win in Frisco). Otherwise, let the low majors play in the CIT.

I still think it's a bad look for a program to basically announce that they anticipate being third-rate.

I mean...you go from beating the No. 24 team in the country on their home floor as momentum coming into 1st round conference tournament bye...to announcing a CIT game and selling tickets for it?

They are publicly taking a consultation prize before playing a single tournament game. Behind the scenes? Sure...make your deals...but at least act like you expect to succeed.

Wouldn't the players play their best knowing if they lose in the CUSA tournament, there are no more consolation games?

It's the financial reality.

Barring a Tournament Championship, Marshall would have to wait till late Sunday night for an NIT bid. If they don't get an NIT then they have less than 24 hours in ticket sales for the CIT game.

$35,000 in ticket sales is contracted for the first game. Much easier to reach if you have more than just day of game sales.

Charlotte has a policy of not playing in the post-season pay to play tournaments.

Apparently we also have a policy of not playing in the conference tournament. 03-banghead

Well if you don’t make the tournaments that start with an N then good luck in the CIT. Go and win it all.

I can see both sides of this. Yes, it’s premature but you have to give fans a heads up in order to sell tickets. But it does provide post season experience for a team that will have a very legit shot to win CUSA next year. If we don’t, possibly an NIT bid would be forthcoming. This experience would hopefully pay off next season so we wouldn’t have that deer in the headlights look for the NCAA or NIT. We’ll see.

I think we have a better shot of actually making the NCAA tournament then getting into the NIT. The NIT is hard tournament to make.

They generally reward the big boys, and there's really truly only maybe 5 to 10 open spots for smaller conference teams. And with Marshall sitting in an RPI of 100, even with a run to the championship that's probably not enough.

And I don't think that we really have a shot of winning the conference championship so why not go ahead and put yourself out there as available for this tournament. There's really no downside.

This doesn't mean that Marshall is going to concede the tournament, it just means that we've already set up some good assurances.

RE: Marshall basketball accepts a CIT bid, will host... - rileylives - 03-07-2018 02:32 PM

There was a year where I believe Marshall was sitting with an RPI between the 40s and 50s, played the number 6 overall toughest out of conference strength of schedule in the nation, and still didn't make the NIT.

What would Vince Lombardi have done?

Watson, West, and Williams all play significant minutes. All are Freshmen. All need as much experience as possible. And several others eligible for next year are already with the team and can absolutely benefit from the practice time. In fact, with only 1, 5 minute senior leaving, it's a no-brainer to join the tournament. Your opinion is...well just that.

My only problem with the whole thing is that we most need road toughness. Go on the road for this tournament and learn to dig deep every time. I mean we can't get a pushover like MTSU every road game so we need practice.
