C-USA baseball power rankings before league play - BeagleUSM - 03-11-2018 08:02 PM

Anyone want to take a stab at this? It's tough. The league appears to be pretty terrible this season.

1) USM
2) FAU (LaTech has better wins with 2/3 in Frisco, but still like FAU over them for now)
3) LaTech
4) Rice
5) Charlotte
6) UTSA
7) Marshall
8) WKU
9) FIU
10) MTSU
11) UAB
12) Old Dominion

OOC play isn't over. A lot of mid week games left to be played.

RE: C-USA baseball power rankings after OOC play - ExcitedOwl18 - 03-11-2018 08:07 PM

Rice belongs further down the list.

Maybe #4 if we’re healthy but right now we don’t have our #2, 3, or 4 starters nor our best hitter (Dom DiCaprio).

That said, we should still be playing better than the $hit sandwich we’ve shown so far. Our offense was just as bad as our pitching this weekend. No clutch hitting at all.

Yeah, I meant OOC weekend. I’ll edit my title.

RE: C-USA baseball power rankings before league play - thefaU - 03-11-2018 09:33 PM

It's definitely been a rough start to the season as a conference, but hopefully we can win some of our remaining midweek games to improve our win %.

Looking ahead to the first weekend of conference play, the series to watch is definitely Rice @ La Tech. Whoever can take that series will have some momentum going forward.

I think your rankings are more or less how I would've done them as well -- I'd probably put La Tech ahead of us at least for now.

Conference USA is #15 in league RPI right now.

You guys are definitely a mess right now (for Rice standards), but are still probably a top 3-4 team in this league. Get Dunlap, DiCaprio, Moss, and Salinas back and I'd expect Rice to be pretty competitive in a CUSA that is way down in 2018.

RE: C-USA baseball power rankings before league play - ExcitedOwl18 - 03-11-2018 11:19 PM

I can’t exactly figure out why our conference RPI is at #15. Sure, our winning percentage is down from previous seasons but it’s still well above .500.

I guess we’ve just played a lesser SoS and maybe less road games?

The following leagues are ahead of CUSA in RPI but below CUSA in win %.

Big Ten (road games)
Sun Belt (strong OOCs from their top 3 programs)
MVC (road games + some decent OOC scheduling)
WCC (???)
Big West (very difficult OOC for several teams)
Big East (road games + not as many teams at the bottom dragging down the league)

LT's rotation will make them tough to beat on the weekends

We graduated a lot of talent last year. Will take time to get these young guys going.

The staff has been dominate to put it lightly. Top 10 in ERA, WHIP, and K/BB ratio. The competition has been average to below average outside of the Frisco series so I'm interested to see how we do against Rice this weekend. Regardless of how Rice has done this year they are still the measuring stick in the conference along with USM and FAU (though Tech has only faced them a couple times in the conference tourney).

Also, I got to digging around Warrennollan and looked into the predicted records and they have Marshall being 2nd at this point. I know that is an inexact science and it early but found it interesting.

RE: C-USA baseball power rankings before league play - Mr. Bojangles - 03-12-2018 10:32 AM

Charlotte has been ..meh in the OOC.

No bad losses. Won the games over lesser opponents.

We played #18 ECU and Georgia on 2 of the weekends and got swept, lost to #10 NC State mid-week.
When we stepped up in competition we competed in close games but couldn't get over the hump. Nothing to show for it.

I am comfortable with our weekend guys and think we'll be in the mix for Top 4 by the end of the season. And I agree, it looks to be a down year for the conference unfortunately.

This is pretty disappointing after finishing 5th & 6th as a conference over the past two seasons. It will improve, but I don't see us back in the top 6.

I’ll take the #4 ranking and hope we can live up to that at least until we get healthy and maybe make a run later.
Not liking our chances opening @LaTech though.
