Tulsa's thinking about extending Haith. I want everyone else's thoughts. - invisiblehand - 03-12-2018 12:11 PM

Let me know what you guys think.

No postseason in Year 4 isn’t a good look. I would say as long as his contract currently takes him through 2020, it’s fine as is.

This. Have you not seen the current UCONN/Ollie mess?

Don't extend. Unless you think he is EXCEEDING expectations. Otherwise, leave it alone until he can get some postseason appearances

Sounds great to me

If you don't extend, it will hamper recruiting effectively sealing his fate. I would add one year each year keeping him at 3 years rolling until he either breaks through or you fire him. You can't just let the contract run out.

i wouldn't yet...wait a year
he hasn't done enough

but it all depends on expectations
if tulsa is happy being competitive, being a top 100 rpi yearly..make 1 nit and 1 ncaa every 5 years or so..i guarantee he can do that

if tulsa wants to be in the tourney yearly, or 2 out 3 years, and get good enough seeds to actually move on..he isnt the guy

No way. TU can do better than that sloth. Dude was a coaching has-been before he even found a real estate agent in Tulsa.

Wait, is someone trying to hire him away?

If not, tough titties.

I just wanted to confirm that I wasn't crazy in being completely against this. About half the Tulsa boards seem to be okay with it which seems ludicrous to me.

If you know anything about running a collegiate athletic program, you know you can't allow a head coach's contract to drop below 3 years. Every coach he's recruiting against will use it against him telling the recruit that he'll likely be soon playing for a coach he wasn't recruited by. The AD must publicly proclaim full faith in the coach until it's announced he is to be replaced. Letting a contract fall below 3 years is the same as saying he's going to be fired which does nothing but hurt the program.

I'd be ok with a small extension (1 or 2 years) without a pay raise if it will help in recruiting. But nothing more than that.

The only move is to extend one year or fire now. Otherwise Haith may as well sit at home and play Xbox until next season because he'll be worthless on the recruiting trail. Maybe Tulsa can give him some additional chores around the athletic office this off-season to keep him busy?

How are his future players doing, I thought he signed two bigs and a guard for next season.

RE: Tulsa's thinking about extending Haith. I want everyone else's thoughts. - Stickboy46 - 03-12-2018 02:50 PM

Extension is ok .. if and ONLY if the buyout amount doesn't change. It has to be strictly for recruiting purposes. Basically tell Haith that he isn't performing up to par. We are willing to extend you so you won't be sabotaged by "uncertainty" but you haven't earned a buyout increase. If he doesn't like it? no extension.

RE: Tulsa's thinking about extending Haith. I want everyone else's thoughts. - TulsaEye - 03-12-2018 02:55 PM

He might get you to the NIT, but the Dance no. If it hasn't happened by year 4 its not going to. One year extensions. No buyout increase maybe a decrease. If he doesn't like let him walk. Has yet to sign anyone that could be that break through player. Gets out coached by top team coaches. If AD extends beyond one extensions get a new AD also.

RE: Tulsa's thinking about extending Haith. I want everyone else's thoughts. - invisiblehand - 03-12-2018 05:32 PM

I think Tulsa needs to think in terms of cash flow. There's nothing on the horizon that says Haith is going to be landing enough big recruits to make us an NCAA tournament. We only have one "big" recruit on the radar and we're not even being seriously mentioned in his recruiting profiles anymore.

Additionally we need to think about the fact that Haith is the highest paid coach in our history. Buying him out is going to be tough for us be it with 4 years remaining on his contract or one year remaining. It's going to hinder our ability to pay his successor commensurate to our desires to be a top flight basketball program.

Tell him to hit the bricks and bring Tubby Smith back.

I am not in favor of an extension, & I would guess 75% of posters making comments on the rivals board are not in favor of it. Some see it as a recruiting necessity & believe/hope that the "extension" is publicized for recruiting purposes, but the university is not guaranteeing any more years or $. I hope that is the case.

Haith has actually coached OK, & most of the players have improved season over season. However, his recruiting has been much weaker than it should be.

If Tubby wasn't turning 67 this summer, I would be in favor of this.
