Kermit Davis is leaving MT because... - MU42 - 03-14-2018 11:58 AM

he can go 18-13 with Ole Miss and make the tournament, but can’t go 24-7 with MT and make it.

This system is not only stealing money from Conferences by giving lesser power Conference schools bids, but it’s also causing coaches that might otherwise want to stay at the school they are at to feel they have to change jobs to make the tournament.

This is worse than the football playoff. And I know we need our government to take care of things that matter like healthcare laws, taxes, etc, but this is a lot of money being given to mostly public universities, and people who work for these universities giving money (bids) to schools in which they benefit from financially.

You nailed it.

The collusions is epic. If investigated it would bring down the entire NCAA.

Of course that may happen anyway.

Why would he not? I mean it would have helped MTSU win 1 out of those 3 games they lost against P5 teams, but more than likely they were still not getting in...He took his ball and gave up....He will start SEC every season with 10-13 wins with home games and knows if he goes .500 or above he is in NCAA tournament with a good seed and at worst in NIT most seasons unless a rebuilding season here or there...How old is Kermit?

More money probably has a lot to do with it

I knew it was over when I saw his special needs daughter Ally crying and hugging folks last night. I will miss her smiling face.

...he was scared of Jeff Jones.

(It's only a matter of time, so get out while you can),

It took Davis 9 years at Middle to figure it out:

02-03 16-14
03-04 17-12
04-05 19-12
05-06 16-12
06-07 15-17
07-08 17-15
08-09 18-14
09-10 19-14 CIT
10-11 16-16
11-12 27-7 only the NIT

Middle admin was a lot more patient with him than I think even I would have been with him. I would say he gets 3 years at place that really could probably not care about basketball that much. Some of the things Ive heard about Andy Kennedys tenure doesn't lead me to believe things will change there. Despite the big pay raise Davis will get from MTSU to Ole Miss, he will probably still be the lowest paid in the SEC just like Kennedy.

Truth is I'm glad Marshall isn't looking for a new coach right now, With the FBI investigation coming to a head this summer/fall its hard to tell who gets caught up in it, and what if you hire someone that does get caught, what then.

Yeah, basketball is the clear #3 sport at Ole Miss.

That said, where there is money and a good facility, there is potential. Also, I don’t think “big pay raise” is the way to describe your salary tripling.

For Ole Miss, it is a weird hire. It is safe in the sense that Davis has a high floor. But I’m not sure why people should think he will do better than AK. Hence a lack of excitement from that fanbase. I think most Ole Miss fans concede that Kennedy wasn’t underperforming. They just got tired of him. Not sure picking a guy who mirrors him in so many ways will turn out well.

In the 12 years Kennedy was at Ole Miss he never had a 4 star player sign with him. All of his recruits were 2 and 3 star players, that's fine if you know how to develop players and have them play past their ceiling, I never seen that with Kennedy and since Middle has been in CUSA Ive not seen it with Davis. Giddy Potts was the same player his senior year as when he 1st got to Middle as a freshman. Its hard to actually be really good in a sport when probably you are out recruited by 11 or 12 other members of the same conference. But hey, he can enjoy the money while its there and maybe be a color analyst for ESPN/CBSSports afterwards.

I hate the conference losing such a fine coach as Kermit Davis. MTSU has owned my alma mater, and that starts at the top. Best of luck in the SEC, Coach.

Kennedy signed some four-star recruits and a few others that were top-100. None of them became much of anything. Murphy Holloway was a solid, versatile player but nothing more--and he was probably the best of the higher-profile recruits. Kennedy mostly relied on solid (but nothing more) HS and JUCO players that surrounded a JUCO or transfer shooter.
