Rumor to make most CUSA fans hopeful - MinerInWisconsin - 03-16-2018 03:55 PM
MWC rumor from NMSU Chancellor
Most fans on this board, including UTEP fans, would like to see UTEP leave. If the Chancellor of NMSU rumor comes true and UTEP does go to the MWC, we will all be happy.

"While at the WAC Basketball Tournament, I met with the Presidents and Athletic Directors of the WAC schools to discuss business as well as the challenges facing the Conference regarding membership. The WAC is initiating an aggressive membership campaign. Commissioner Jeff Hurd said “something was going to happen and happen soon” regarding conference alignments and realignments. One rumor was the Mountain West would become a 16-member conference with two-8 member divisions. NMSU could come into play as a new member, along with UTEP."

Well, I'd be happy for you but unless you take the other TX teams with you I'm not real happy about it (no offense to TX teams). We'd be uneven and would have to replace eventually, probably with TXST. I'd rather keep the Miners.

Why would MW want to go to16? What benefit is there to add UTEP and NMSU?

Ive enjoyed being in a conference with UTEP. My grandfather is a UTEP alum and being in the same conference has enabled us to watch games together more often.
I also agree that UTEP leaving probably means a Texas State call up and im not sure they are ready. The FBS level has not been kind to them since their move-up.

Without fail every off season the UTEP to MW rumors heat up. It does seem the last two-three years the smoke has been getting stronger. I wonder who the other two schools would be.

So if they are 11/12 members now and there were rumors already that they were in talks with Gonzaga which would make them 12/12 and they bring in UTEP/NMSU that's only 14 right? Who would the other two be?

We could keep ODU men's basketball, like the AAC has done with Wichita State, but send all the rest of their sports packing including their lousy football.

Just heard Tech is including in the MWC talks, Tech has strong relationships with old WAC schools.

End of their tv contract coming soon. Doubtful they get a raise. Maybe they're looking to improve travel costs, or boost their potential for tournament revenue. Despite being bad the last few years, UTEP, still places a lot of value on hoops. NMSU definitely helps with that as well.

I’m sure TXST would love to play other Texas teams. They are kind of on an island now that NMSU is out. I think Arkansas State is content enough to want to stay though.

This is kind of a head scratcher. Louisiana Tech as the third school also seems odd.
The other C-USA school with deep WAC ties is Rice.
